Health, Human & Justice Studies
Get an introduction to programs in the School of Health, Human & Justice Studies from Dean June-MacDonald-Jenkins.
Did you know that students in Loyalist’s health, human services, social development and public safety programs collaborate on integrated programming, projects and applied research in the College’s renovated third floor Northumberland Wing?
The Wing houses experiential learning environments, interprofessional simulation centres and high-tech classrooms.
Watch the video below to tour this innovative space with Dean June MacDonald-Jenkins.
Personal Support Worker
Help with personal care can mean the difference between people living independently and giving up their homes. The demand for personal support workers is greater than ever and keeps growing in order to meet the needs of a retiring population. Make a difference every day by helping people live with independence and dignity.
Social Service Worker
Social Service Workers help individuals and families deal with broad and complex issues such as poverty, access to needed social supports, reduction of oppression and social prejudice, educational challenges, mental health, addictions, abuse, illness and loss. This program will prepare you for the rewards and challenges of supporting people as they change and grow.
Child & Youth Care
Child and youth care practitioners offer life-changing support to vulnerable children, youth and their families. Prepare for a rewarding career helping young people by engaging with them in their everyday lives, building on their strengths, and empowering them to make positive changes.
Fitness & Health Promotion
More and more, people are looking to make the most of their exercise experiences with workouts that get results and are engaging and fun. Qualified fitness and health professionals help people lead better, longer lives through healthy, active lifestyles.
Recreation & Leisure Services – Sports
Our busy days are often highly scheduled, making it essential that quality wellness and recreation services are available within our community. Recreation and sport professionals help build healthy communities and develop programs for individuals of all ages.
Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant
Occupational therapist assistants and physiotherapist assistants (OT/PTAs) support individuals in achieving optimal mobility and daily functioning. Prepare for a rewarding career helping people of all ages and abilities improve their quality of life.
Practical Nursing
Practical nurses are integral members of a health care team, providing care to patients of all ages. They combine nursing skills, knowledge and clinical judgment to provide a full range of nursing care within their scope of practice.
Paramedic
Paramedics are often the first people on the scene of an emergency. They balance compassion with critical decision-making skills and the ability to take command in a crisis and help save lives.
Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training
Firefighters are on the front line of emergency response and are an integral part of any community, contributing to public safety, fire awareness and education. Learn the skills and knowledge to prepare you for success in the fast-paced and rewarding field of firefighting with this program, which conforms to the requirements for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001.
Justice Studies
During a common first year with four different Justice Studies programs, students gain insight into human behaviour and Canada’s social and political structures. This provides students with the flexibility to transfer directly into the second year of Customs Border Services, Police Foundations, Community and Justice Services, or Protection, Security and Investigation. In only one additional year, graduates can complete a second Justice Studies diploma – doubling their career options!
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Registered nurses choose many career directions, from making split-second decisions in the ER, to preventing illness through community health promotion. Meet new challenges every day in this personally and financially rewarding profession.
