Virtual Orientation Helps Students Prepare for September

August 12, 2010

First-year students who are registered to attend Loyalist College in September had the opportunity to participate in a four-week, on-line virtual orientation in July. The program was designed to provide students with a fun way to learn about Loyalist while preparing for a successful college experience. Discussion forums enabled students to converse on-line with current students and staff, gaining information and support in preparation for their transition to college. The four-week orientation is now complete, however, the discussion boards will remain open until Labour Day and the content posted until Thanksgiving.

“This year the Virtual Orientation on Facebook enjoyed nearly 950 monthly active users, which was really exciting for us to see at Loyalist,” said Deiana Gonyea from Student Success Services. “Students were becoming familiar with the services available to them at Loyalist, discussing things they would need to bring when moving into residence and even getting tips on ways to avoid the homesick blues when they arrive. The interaction with returning students and the faculty was a valuable resource for the first-year students to draw upon.”

Tanya Brown is a mature student entering the Practical Nursing program in September. “I definitely think the service is helpful to both mature students and those coming right out of high school. It enables everyone to prepare for their new journey with a small glimpse into the future. I thought each of the segments was very informative. I especially enjoyed the nursing segment because it reaffirmed my choice and heightened my excitement to be there.”

“The virtual orientation enabled me to talk to other people in my program,” said Glenyce Regan who is entering the Social Service Worker program. “Initially I was reading other students’ input on courses, facilitators and the College. Then I decided I’d give it a try. I spoke with three from my program. If I hadn’t participated I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet these people. Talking with other students and hearing similar things like excitement and nervousness made me feel less alone.”

“The 2010 Summer Virtual Orientation activity, using a Facebook platform, allows our staff to impart relevant information about the College and also allows students to develop important connections with peers,” said Catherine O’Rourke, Acting Vice-President, Enrolment Management and Student Services. “This early relationship building activity serves to enhance long-term student success. It is rewarding to see the excitement of our new cohort build as we move closer to September.”
