Students Experience College Learning Opportunities Prior to Choosing Post Secondary Path

May 11, 2012

During the past two weeks Loyalist College has welcomed hundreds of students to the campus – providing them with the exciting opportunity of experiencing first-hand the college learning environment.

May 3rd – 12 students from Centre Hastings Secondary School spent the day focusing primarily on manufacturing activities. They tried their hands at mig and arc welding using the College’s newest equipment and they were given a demonstration on the CNC plasma cutter. In the industrial maintenance shop they made a pipe arrangement that once completed, was pressure tested. They received a demonstration on the CNC machines and used the magnetic base drill.  These activities gave them exposure to processes unavailable to them at their high school.

“Every year I take my senior high school students to Loyalist to spend a day in the Mechanical Techniques and the Welding programs.  My students love it – I love it.  My students get to see and use equipment that they will not see in secondary school.  Loyalist’s shops are state-of-the-art: what one would see working in industry.  Spending a day there gives them a feel of what college life is like and inspires them to look beyond secondary school.  Every year some of my students go to Loyalist and then go on to work as millwrights, CNC technicians and welders.  I am proud of them and I know the Loyalist teaching staff is also proud of them.  Many thanks to John Poste, John Grieves and the rest of the instructors at Loyalist.”

May 7th, 10th and 11th Skills and Trade Exhibit – Included over 60 grade 10 to 12 students from Sharbot Lake High School, Sydenham High School, Adam Scott Collegiate and Vocational Institute, and Moira Secondary School. This program was designed to introduce high school students to the skills training programs at Loyalist. They participated in hands-on activities in welding, automotive and manufacturing.

“I would just like to thank you for everything that you did yesterday.  It shows how much of a class act your college is.  The students really enjoyed themselves and I have already had some grade 10s approach me and inquire about next year.  A couple of my students, on the way home, said that Loyalist is where they will be attending school.  You should be proud of your college, faculty, and your hard work.

Thanks ever so much.”

May 9th – 11th – School College Work Initiative (SCWI) is a partnership funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and the Ministry of Education. SETUP is a series of interactive, hands-on sessions relating to science, engineering and technology pathways. These programs give students a first-hand College experience — they have the chance to come to Loyalist and explore that pathway. The following SETUP sessions were held at Loyalist this week.

On the 9th – A group of 80 grade ten students from local and visiting high schools participated in two sessions based on their varied interests. The sessions included nursing, construction, electrical, radio, and television and new media production. These students were from Moira Secondary School, Nicholson Catholic School, Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, St. Mary’s (Cobourg), St. Paul’s Secondary School and St. Theresa Secondary School.

10th – Approximately 45 students had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on Bioscience workshop focused on water quality, stream ecology and Daphnia Magna Bioassay. Students also learned about the pathways available in the Biosciences field. Tours of the Bioscience labs and general campus facilities and services were included in the visit. Bayside Secondary School and Nicholson Catholic School participated.

10th – E-Journalism was showcased to approximately 30 students, giving them the opportunity to create a personal piece of online literature. Using lecturing techniques taught to them in a previous visit to Loyalist, the students learned to develop their confidence in approaching someone who is not well known to them and conduct an interview based on a specific topic. In a follow-up visit to Loyalist, students will have their work reviewed and discussed with Loyalist faculty and current Journalism, Online, Print Broadcast (JOPB) students. Students from Centennial Secondary School, St. Theresa Secondary School attended.

11th – Primary School students, Junior Journalism: 15 elementary school students were given a photo assignment approximately two weeks prior to the activity day. This assignment asked the students to use a digital camera to photograph an interesting person they know. They were to bring 25 to 30 photos of their subject that demonstrate why they find this person interesting. They learned to edit their photos and produce a journalistic storytelling slide show under the supervision of Loyalist faculty, using Photo Mechanic and Photoshop software. They wrote caption information and produced a CD/DVD of their pictures followed by a presentation of their slideshow to faculty and fellow students in a projected group critique session. Participating schools included Trenton, Stirling, Sophiasburgh and Sacred Heart.
