Loyalist College Student Government Encourages Renewed Efforts to Recycle on Campus

The Loyalist College Student Government has launched a campaign to reinforce and increase awareness of the College’s recycling program. Their objective was to remind students and staff about the systems that Loyalist has in place and to encourage everyone to continue with, and improve upon their recycling efforts. As part of the campaign, a series of prizes such as environmental shopping bags, travel mugs and Green Guide Magazines were presented to those spotted using the recycling systems on campus.

“Recycling is important as a day-to-day activity, but there are so many additional things you can do on a daily basis to help the environment; things as simple as turning off the lights when you leave a room or saving e-mail messages electronically rather than printing a hard copy,” said Jessica Bourque, President of the Loyalist Student Government. “The smallest things can have the biggest impact. I encourage all students and staff to check out the Student Government website and read the information about where and what you can recycle at the College.”

“We have partnered with Loyalist College since 2005 to divert recyclables from landfill,” said Martin Sherris, District Manager, Waste Services Inc.  “Both students and staff have worked together through the program in place to divert cardboard, other paper products, aluminum, tin, plastics and glass beverage containers from the waste stream. We look forward to continuing our program with the College and investigating additional recycling initiatives that may further increase recycling volume and divert more waste from landfill.”

Daria Rybcza is a third-year Bio-Food Technology student and was one of those rewarded for her recycling efforts. “I truly believe that people will do the right thing if given the opportunity. The more convenient the systems are, the more that recycling will increase here at Loyalist.”
