Return to Learn Days Assist Mature Students Energize Their Careers

January 13, 2012

Loyalist College is helping mature students energize or re-start their career path. The College is pleased to offer mature students increased access to planning and application information.  Return to Learn days are scheduled on Tuesday, January 17 and 24.  Individuals can book an appointment time throughout the day or during the evening to meet with a College advisor in order to get information and discuss issues that can help them improve their educational levels and enhance their careers. Subsequent Return to Learn events will be scheduled through the upcoming months.

In addition, Loyalist’s Student Enrolment Services office will be open Tuesday evenings until 8:00 p.m. starting January 17.

Return to Learn participants will have the opportunity to explore Loyalist’s over 60 career-focused programs and look at ways to match their interests with career options. The advisors will be available to assist with the application process, provide information on financial assistance options including Second Career, and introduce the broad range of student success services. There will also be the option to learn about the process of evaluating past experience through Prior Learning Assessment (PLAR) in order to receive potential credit toward the chosen field of study.

Shawn McLeish, a Sports Journalism student at Loyalist, attended Return to Learn before deciding to enrol. “At first, I was intimidated by the thought of returning to school with those who had just graduated from high school. The Return to Learn event put my mind at ease by reinforcing that there were other students in my age range who were considering going back to college. Most of the material can be found in the College calendar, but it was helpful to have Loyalist staff navigate me through the information. They provided reassurance in regard to the financial aspects and that was the deciding factor that pushed me to take the plunge. The staff will be able to answer all your questions to ensure you have the information necessary prior to making your decision. I recommend the session to anyone entertaining the idea of returning to school.”

“We understand that returning to school can be an intimidating experience,” said Bill Walsh, Vice-President of Enrolment Management and Student Services. “Our objective is to make this process enjoyable and stress-free through personalized attention to your specific needs – once your questions are answered, you will feel much more confident in making your decision.”

Appointments for the January 17 and 24 Return to Learn days will be approximately 40 minutes in length.  Online registration is available.  Participants will be able to indicate areas of primary interest at the time of booking. Appointments can also be arranged by calling (613) 969-1913, ext. 2100 or by email at info@loyalistcollege.com.
