Loyalist Sales and Marketing Students Graduate With Solid Employment Prospects

April 28, 2011

Hard sell or soft sell, profit or non-profit, local or international – successful industry, business and services all rely on a solid base of marketing knowledge and sales skills. This is the foundation that the Loyalist Business Sales and Marketing students graduate with – their skills are needed everywhere.

Kelly Brintnell, a second-year Business Sales and Marketing student, came to Loyalist with a hairstylist background. “The job shadow opportunities I had this year helped build my confidence and heightened my interest in fields beyond my comfort zone in the fashion and beauty industry. The program has prepared me to work in a wide range of businesses and I would feel confident in representing any product or service whose company I believed in.

“I completed my four-week internship with the Ontario Hockey League’s Kingston Frontenacs. The networking opportunities were exceptional as I attended meetings that resulted in great employment leads. As a hard worker who appreciates being rewarded for a job well done, I find commission-based sales very motivating and I’m excited to be starting the next chapter in my career.”

Kelly’s classmate Ashley Murray praises the program and how it has prepared her to enter the sales and marketing field. “Initially I was worried that I would be unable to transfer the skills I was learning to the workforce – this no longer concerns me. We practiced company role-play scenarios and sales simulations which prepared me for a seamless transition from the classroom to the workplace. The relevance of these exercises became evident in my job shadow opportunities in economic development, the business improvement field and private industry sales. My internship was also with the Frontenacs. It gave me experience in working on the corporate advertising campaign for the team’s upcoming season. I had the opportunity to develop and execute a sales plan, and gained a better understanding of how to maintain and grow an existing customer base.  I’ve learned so much from my classroom studies, job shadows and internship experience.  All of these skills are transferable – which translates into exciting possibilities as I start my new sales and marketing career.

Jeff Stilwell, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Kingston Frontenacs spoke highly of the work Kelly and Ashley had done with the organization. “Both Ashley and Kelly were absolutely prepped and ready to go when they arrived for their internship. Their sales knowledge and desire to get ahead make them individuals who would be an asset to any organization. It was impressive to work with them. Kudos to Loyalist College for preparing the students so exceptionally well to take on all challenges.”
