OCAA Honours Former Loyalist Athletes

June 22, 2009

Loyalist College is proud to announce that three former Lancer athletes were inducted into the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Hall of Fame at the 2009 Awards Presentation. The inductees are former athletes, coaches and builders who have distinguished themselves as leaders and set a high standard for future athletes, coaches and administrators. The three Loyalist alumni honoured were David Fralick, Alan Jones and Wendy Anderson (née Rowbotham).

David Fralick graduated from the three-year Business Administration program in 1994. A very versatile athlete, he stood out on both the touch football and basketball teams. He played offence and defence on the touch football team, was the top rated quarterback in the OCAA and was a dominant defensive player. As captain, he helped lead his team to an OCAA bronze medal in the 1988–89 season and was named his team’s MVP. On the basketball court David was a tremendous point guard with excellent court awareness, excelling at defence, and could be depended upon to shut down the opponent’s leading scorer. His outstanding play was key to Loyalist winning the 1992-93 OCAA Division II Championship. He served as captain for the three years that he played as a Lancer, was named the team’s MVP twice and was a league or tournament all-star each year that he played. He was also the recipient of the Daryl Broughton Award as the most dedicated member of the men’s basketball team. For his outstanding contributions to both the touch football and basketball teams, he was chosen as the College’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1988-89.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alan Jones graduated from the Advertising program at Loyalist in 1993 with a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average. He helped lead the men’s basketball team to two Ontario medals at the Division II level. During the 1991-92 season, the Lancers won the bronze medal and the following year claimed victory at the Provincial Championship. They were also crowned regular season League Champions both years. Alan served as one of the team captains during the 1992-93 season. During his basketball career at Loyalist he averaged over 20 points each game and during his rookie season finished second in league scoring. He was named a league and tournament all-star twice and was the leading scorer and MVP at the 1992-93 Championship. He also represented the College at the annual All-star game. In 1991-92 he was voted the team’s MVP and was named the College’s Male Athlete of the Year. Alan was the recipient of the prestigious Arthur McFarlane Award, which is presented annually to a graduating student who has made an outstanding contribution to athletics at Loyalist College.

Wendy Rowbotham attended Loyalist College from 1987-89 and then again from 1997-99. While attending Loyalist she became a dominant force in the OCAA women’s fastball league.  In 1988 she won both the league’s batting title and the top pitcher’s award making her the only player to ever receive both awards in the same year.  She helped lead her team to a silver medal at the Ontario Championships that year.  She was OCAA All-Star and her team’s MVP each of the four years she attended Loyalist.  In 1988 she was named Loyalist College Female Athlete of the Year for her outstanding efforts with both the fastball and volleyball teams. In recognition of her academic and athletic excellence she was presented the Bob Young Award in 1998.  Wendy was named a member of the OCAA Women’s Fastball All-Millennium Team. After graduating she continued to contribute to Loyalist by coaching the fastball team for eight years.

“We are very proud of these individuals and support the honour they have received as inductees into the OCAA Hall of Fame,” said Jim Buck, Assistant Director of Athletics at Loyalist College. “The drive, determination, desire and ability these athletes displayed during their time as Lancers allowed them to excel in their respective sports. It is the commitment and skills of individuals such as David, Alan and Wendy that form the foundation upon which we continue to build the great tradition of athletics at Loyalist College.”

Former Loyalist inductees into the OCAA Hall of Fame include Bruce Collins (coach), John Bertelink (athlete), Brad Gordon (athlete), Chris Carson (coach) and Regyna Armonas (athlete).
