New Art and Design Foundation Program in September

February 12, 2009

A new one-year Art and Design Foundation certificate program will begin at Loyalist College in September. The hands-on, experiential program is designed to meet the needs of students interested in careers in art and design. Students will focus on both traditional and digital media, developing a broad-based portfolio that reflects a flexible creative palette.  Students may choose to identify, for further study, a specific sector within the art and design industry and build a portfolio targeting that area. Graduates are able to demonstrate both their artistic skill and the depth of their post-secondary education.

“This new program will introduce students to the possibilities and avenues available for those wishing to pursue a career in art and design,” said Doug Comeau of Timberwolf Gallery in Trenton. “At Loyalist there is the facility and the capability to provide an outstanding new art and design program here in our area.  I’ve had the pleasure of pursuing my dream as a professional artist and understand the value that this program will bring to students.”

Andruw Belanger, of U! Marketing in Belleville, is a graduate of the Loyalist Advertising program and is a member of the advisory committee for the Art and Design Foundation program. “Being a creative person myself, initially I was unsure of what I wanted to do. Had this program been available to me when I was making course and college selections it would have been high on my list. It’s a solid one-year program for those who love art and design, but don’t know what direction they want to pursue, or more importantly what their options are.”

“This program has been designed to include a balance of skills in fine arts and design,” explained Jane Harrison, Acting Dean of Media Studies. “Graduates will have a clearer understanding of their choices, and will have built upon their skills to strengthen their portfolios. Once they discover their passion, some may further their studies right here at Loyalist in a wide range of career-oriented media, building science and architecture programs.”

The Art and Design Foundation program was developed for students who are interested in popular culture, art, architecture, design, photography, animation and gaming. Those who have a creative flair, with or without previous drawing or computer experience, may be well-suited for the program. Find out more about the Art and Design Foundation program.
