Loyalist Wins Best College/University Newspaper Website at the OCNA Awards

March 26, 2013

Belleville, Ontario, March 26, 2013 – Loyalist College is proud to announce that its student-run QNet News, www.qnetnews.ca, has been named Best College/University Newspaper Website for the third consecutive year at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association’s (OCNA) Better Newspaper Competition (BNC) Awards Gala on Friday, March 22.

“I am honoured that QNet News has won the prestigious OCNA award for best student newspaper website for the third time,” said Jane Harrison, Dean, School of Media, Arts and Design at Loyalist College. “Our Journalism – Online, Print and Broadcast program is dedicated to a multi-platform approach to storytelling and therefore QNet News encompasses the best in video, audio, print, and still photography. This blending of media will be enhanced as we redevelop the website to help our audience move seamlessly through each medium while consuming stories of interest. Our students’ multimedia and social media stories reflect the lives of people living in the Quinte region while also tackling issues of international importance.”

As a testament to the superior quality of multimedia education provided through Loyalist’s Journalism program, 2006 graduate and Oakville Beaver news reporter David Lea won the Stephen Shaw Award for Reporter of the Year. In addition, Loyalist Photojournalism students Kristen Haveman and Dan Pearce placed second and third in the Student Photography award category.
