Loyalist to Host Skills Competition For Secondary School Students

February 18, 2014

On Thursday, February 20th Loyalist College will host Skills Loyalist to provide secondary school students in grades 11 and 12 with an opportunity to compete in the following skilled trades categories:

  • Automotive Service Technician
  • Esthetics
  • Carpentry
  • Precision Machining
  • Photography
  • Welding

Sponsored by Trenval Business Development Corporation, the event will build awareness and excitement around the possibilities of a future career in skilled trades. Students participating will be from schools in the Hastings and Prince Edward District, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District, Kawartha Pine Ridge District, and Limestone District School Boards.

Competitions will occur simultaneously throughout the day in the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre, and the Kente Building. Using Skills Canada standards, a panel of industry experts will judge participants on their performance, as well as a short interview. Students can win up to $1,000* in scholarship funds toward their Loyalist tuition.

“We are delighted to partner with local secondary schools to create opportunities to get their students excited about the possibilities of a career in the booming skilled trades industry,” said Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy. “As many high schools have scaled back their hands-on shop classes in the last decade, we have extended the number of events and incentives for them to experience skilled trades firsthand. We encourage students and their parents and teachers to join us for Skills Loyalist and to speak with our expert faculty about post-secondary options, including apprenticeships.”
