Loyalist Recognizes Varsity Athletic Scholarship Recipients

January 20, 2014

Belleville, Ontario, January 17, 2014 – Loyalist College proudly recognized 27 varsity athletes at the annual Athletic Awards Luncheon on January 16th in Club 213. Student athletes were presented with scholarships in recognition of their athletic, academic and leadership excellence, as well as their contributions to the College’s reputation for athletic excellence.

“Wherever you go, you are wonderful ambassadors for Loyalist,” said Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy at the luncheon. “You add a very important component of excellence, competition, fun and collegiality to our College life which we value and appreciate. Thank you for these wonderful qualities you bring to Loyalist.”

One of the scholarship recipients was varsity volleyball player Adam Strickland, a first-year student in the Fitness and Health Promotion program.

“Being entrusted with the responsibility of co-captain for this team is the greatest experience I’ve ever had,” said Adam. “The support of the Athletic Department and our coaches is amazing and it is thrilling to watch the synergy of these players as they come together as a team.”

“Initially I joined the soccer team to meet people and make friends,” said Hailey VosKamp, soccer captain and Early Childhood Education student. “I never dreamed that I would gain so much more than that. Our team is like a family and being a part of that adds so much to my college experience. My program and teammates are awesome. I never dreamed that I would be the recipient of an athletic scholarship – it’s been such a fantastic year!”

Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, Jim Buck, offered his congratulations to the scholarship recipients. “The beauty of a small college is that we can reach out and celebrate your accomplishments as individuals – acknowledging the effort that you put forward each day. You are very special individuals and we want to thank you for all that you add to the Loyalist community.”
