Loyalist Photojournalism Graduate Named Photographer of the Year

April 08, 2010

The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) has announced that Tyler Anderson, a 2002 graduate of the Loyalist College Photojournalism program, has been named the Eastern Photographer of the Year. This is the second time that he has received this honour. NPAC celebrates and champions quality and ethical photography in journalism. The organization includes over 350 professional press photographers, photo editors and photojournalism students from across Canada. The eastern region includes NPAC members living east of the Manitoba-Ontario border.

Tyler Anderson is a photojournalist for the National Post and teaches a video and multimedia journalism class at the College. “Recognition like this is the very best kind of reward because you are being judged by your mentors and those that you work with. I give Loyalist 110% of the credit for where I am today. Prior to college I worked at a factory. Then I came to Loyalist and my entire life changed. I met the people who have become my closest friends and my mentors from whom I have learned so much. I’m just an ordinary guy and I got the dream job. I tell students they just need to stay in the game and be committed. I love what I do. Coming to Loyalist was the best decision I ever made.”

“Tyler lives, eats, sleeps and breathes photojournalism,” said Frank O’Connor, Coordinator of the Loyalist Photojournalism program. “He has made a commitment to so many things in his profession and it shows in his work. He was one of the first National Post photojournalists in Haiti following the earthquake. To see him continuing to grow and develop his skills each year makes us all very proud.”

Anne-Marie Jackson is publisher of the News Photographers Association of Canada.  “Tyler demonstrates the qualities that define our craft – a keen eye, empathy, dedication and enthusiasm for the industry. His personal aesthetic and style elevate his work and have brought him to the forefront of his peers again in this, his second triumph in the East.”
