Loyalist Lancers Break Provincial Records

January 26, 2012

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) has announced that Loyalist College Lancers Kyle Donnan and Matthew Woods, members of the men’s varsity volleyball team, have broken provincial athletic records. During a recent Lancers game against Collège Boréal, Kyle Donnan broke the all-time OCAA career record for offensive points scored and now holds the title with a total of 724 points. The record for all-time OCAA service aces is now held by Matthew Woods with 157 to his credit, surpassing the previous record of 133.

January was an exciting month for Kyle Donnan, a student in Loyalist’s post-graduate Public Relations program and a graduate of Business Sales and Marketing. In addition to his record-breaking status, he was named the OCAA Overall Male Athlete for Men’s Volleyball during the second week of January and was the recipient of an athletic scholarship at the College’s Athletic Luncheon on January 19.

“It feels good to accomplish this,” said Kyle Donnan. “Being involved in athletics develops commitment, leadership and determination, which I feel are three key attributes necessary to succeed in life. Our coaching staff is all former Lancers, which helps them to understand our position as student athletes, respecting the need to balance priorities such as school, athletics and social life.”

Public Relations student Matt Woods, also the recipient of an athletic scholarship, acknowledged the contributions that others had made to his success. “Volleyball is definitely one of my greatest passions and it feels very good to be recognized, although the credit is not mine alone – coaches, teammates, teachers and friends have helped me throughout the years. To be a good volleyball team, teamwork has to be there. A good team, on the court or in the workplace, embraces everyone’s strengths.”

“Loyalist is known for building formidable men’s volleyball teams and we are proud to see the names of Kyle and Matt added to the list of Lancers who have been recognized by the OCAA for their exceptional skills,” said Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation. “Their names are now next to former Lancers such as Brent Tripp, Joey Martins, Todd Boys and Jeff Birrell – outstanding Loyalist athletes who earned recognition at provincial and national levels.”
