Loyalist College Wraps Up Successful “Skills Work!

July 15, 2013

Belleville, Ontario, July 12, 2013 – Loyalist College hosted 16 grades seven and eight students for the “Skills Work!®” summer day camp from Monday, July 8th to Friday, July 12th. Presented in partnership with Skills Canada for the second year, the camp provides participants with an opportunity to explore careers in skilled trades and technologies.

“Loyalist is delighted to be hosting this high-energy camp as part of our roster of dynamic summer programs for youth,” said Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy. “It’s a great way to introduce students to a post-secondary setting and let them experience the skilled trades as fun and exciting options for their future.”

“Campers were introduced to six different skilled trades in Loyalist’s new Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre, including manufacturing, woodworking, biosciences, automotive, welding, and culinary,” explained John O’Rourke, Director, Skills Programming Department. “There were almost an equal number of females and males in the camp, which is very exciting, as Loyalist is committed to enhancing women’s access to skilled trades.”

Directed by Loyalist Professors and Technicians, campers participated in the following hands-on workshops designed to develop their communication, problem solving and teamwork skills:

  • Automotive – removed and replaced tires using pneumatic tools.
  • Biosciences – performed experiments, including DNA identification and observation of Kiwi fruit.
  • Culinary – learned about food safety, measurement and cooking temperatures.
  • Machine and manufacturing – created and launched a rocket.
  • National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton – learned about careers in transportation, military, and construction.
  • Welding – used blueprints, measuring tools, cutters, torches and solder. Campers created their own nameplate using the CNC Plasma cutter.
  • Woodworking – used measuring and math, along with hand and power tools to build a wooden birdhouse.
