Loyalist College Recognizes Varsity Athletes at Scholarship Luncheon

January 19, 2012

Loyalist College was proud to recognize 27 varsity athletes at this year’s annual athletic luncheon on January 19. These individuals have achieved academic excellence while devoting countless hours to practice sessions, and games—both home and away.  They are a great source of pride and school spirit within the College community and the scholarships are in recognition of their athletic, academic and leadership excellence.

This year’s scholarship recipients are:

Women’s Volleyball: Leighann Bishop – Ottawa, Sherene Einarsson – Cobourg, LeeAnne Jeffs – Stirling, and Kirsten Talsma – Kirby

Men’s Volleyball: Curtis Bucking – Ottawa, Kyle Donnan – Pickering, Ian Hortop – Arnprior, Josh Lappala – Kingston, Jared Moelker – Trenton, and Matt Woods – Pickering

Women’s Soccer: Lindsey Buck – Belleville, Lisa Hill – Palmerston, Shelby Lough – Belleville, and Carly Simons – Stratford

Women’s Basketball: Sierra Cauley – Smiths Falls, Martine Gauvin – Sherbrooke, Samantha Goff – Lindsay, Haley Sisler – Belleville, and Jenni Thompson – Belleville

Men’s Basketball: Calvin Chevannes – Brampton, and Damone Donaldson – Ajax

Men’s Rugby:  Kyle Bernard – Trenton, Brad Charlton – Cannifton, Jesse Gunter – Trenton, Lucas Shillington – Belleville, and Michael Latchford – Stirling

The Scott Reid Memorial Award was presented to Matthew Miller for the second consecutive year. Matthew is a graduate of Moira Secondary School. This scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the Men’s Basketball team who best exemplifies the positive attitude, the willingness to improve and succeed, the leadership, the talent, and the true love for the game that Scott Reid brought to the Lancers. Scott was a graduate of Business Administration ’94 and played varsity basketball at the College from ’91 to ’94 while attending Loyalist.

Lucas Shillington, wing on the men’s rugby team, is a student in the College’s Community and Justice Services Worker program. “The highlight of the season was winning the championship—made even sweeter by the fact that it was Loyalist’s third consecutive victory, and my second. Playing varsity sports has added to my college experience in so many ways. In addition to the great friends I’ve made, my coaches have taught me valuable life lessons such as the importance of listening to my superiors, time management, hard work, perseverance and respecting others as well as myself.”

Second-year Police Foundations student, Samantha Goff, explained how varsity sports have enhanced her college experience. “As an out-of-town student, I found that playing basketball made my transition from high school to college much smoother. Initially I didn’t know anyone and being part of the team helped to ease that anxiety. I’m looking at a policing career and there are many skills that I’ve developed as an athlete that will make me a better candidate. When committing to a team and the rules that accompany that, there are choices that need to be made and a certain maturity level is required. These are all positive attributes that will help me when I enter the workforce.”

“This group of students will graduate with a skill set special to those who play competitive team sports – their future employers will be very fortunate to have them,” said Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, when addressing the guests at the luncheon. “Their work ethic, time management, team work and determination are beyond question. They are exceptional and will enrich any environment they choose to become a part of.”
