Loyalist College Recognizes 42 Years of Athletic Excellence

March 26, 2010

On March 24th Loyalist College held its 42nd annual Athletic Banquet to recognize the excellence of its athletes, coaches and trainers. Brittany Denneny, varsity basketball player, was named Female Athlete of the Year and Kyle Donnan, a member of the men’s varsity volleyball team, was presented with the Male Athlete of the Year award.

Brittany Denneny, a student in the Recreation and Leisure Services program from Sault Ste. Marie, consistently scored double digits in points and rebounds and was the leading rebounder in the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA). She was the recipient of the Loyalist women’s basketball MVP award and will represent the College at the upcoming All Star game in Peterborough. “I never thought I would receive an honour like this,” she commented. “From the moment I arrived at Loyalist I knew it was the place for me. The team was like an instant family that made me feel welcome and included. I’ve worked with two coaches during the time that I have played here and I owe both of them a lot for my growth and success. This has been the best three years of my life.”

Kyle Donnan is a Business Sales and Marketing student from Pickering. “I love being part of a team sport. We respect our coaches on and off the court and have grown as a team under their guidance. The skills I’ve developed by playing volleyball are ones that I use in all aspects of my life, teamwork, leadership and my ability to communicate. My Loyalist experience has been second to none.” As MVP for Loyalist’s volleyball team he is a power hitter and an OCAA League All Star. He represented the College at the All Star Game and won the Scoring Title in the OCAA East Region.

“Tonight we are here to recognize our student athletes who have demonstrated excellence on the field of play, in the classroom and within the community,” said Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, in his address to the athletes. “We’re extremely proud of Heather Armstrong and Kayla Hambley from our women’s soccer team for attaining the prestigious Academic All Canadian status. Their academic excellence is reflected by their recognition on the Dean’s List, and they were named as Provincial All Stars in their sport. This year we also shared the excitement as our men’s rugby team charged undefeated through the season winning the Division II Championship. It was wonderful to see the power of your Lancer pride as you came together to cheer them on to victory.”
