LOYALIST COLLEGE RECEIVES SHARED ONLINE COURSE FUNDING FOR FOOD SERVICE WORKER PROGRAM

February 18, 2016

Belleville, Ontario, February 17, 2016 — Loyalist College is pleased to announce that it has received funding to develop an interactive learning experience that will be used to deliver the Food Service Worker (FSW) Ontario College certificate program.

Comprised of six courses, the program follows the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOH-LTC) program standard, validated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Credential Validation Service in 2007.

Throughout the interactive learning modules, there are opportunities in each lesson for applied learning experiences that accommodate various styles and preferences. Feedback is provided automatically and dynamically as learners progress through each module at their own pace. Training is delivered with both visual and text-based representations of curriculum presented in a PDF document to accommodate screen readers. Students’ learning curves are minimized through the standardized navigational design.

“Loyalist has a strong tradition of excellence in online learning, and in fact is one of the founding partners of OntarioLearn, providing online and distance learning to Loyalist and partner college students,” said Maureen Piercy, President and CEO. “Loyalist hosts more than 120 courses within OntarioLearn, and offers approximately 375+ courses from other colleges each semester.”

Loyalist has experienced regular and ongoing success with the FSW program as the MOH-LTC mandates that all staff employed as a food service worker or dietary aide in a long-term care dietary environment must hold, or be working toward completion of, the FSW certificate. Many hospitals require new employees to hold an FSW certificate, and it is anticipated that the majority of Ontario hospitals will require FSW graduates in the future.

“The School of Continuing Education is pleased to receive the Shared Online Course funding for our very highly subscribed online Food Service Worker program.  This funding will allow our very skilled Distance Education team to enhance three courses to engage the online learners with applied, interactive learning experiences,” said Julia Chapelle, Director of Continuing Education and Corporate Training.
