LOYALIST COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH TRENTON MILITARY FAMILY RESOURCE CENTRE

December 08, 2016

Belleville, Ontario, December 8, 2016 — Loyalist College is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) to assist with the facilitation of quality and relevant programming for military members and their families.

Military members across the country and abroad have the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education through the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Portfolio Development program.

“There is significant value in life experiences,” said Loyalist College President & CEO Ann Marie Vaughan. “The College recognizes substantial non-credential learning, which individuals gain through alternative means such as work experience. We have a long history of working with the MFRC and are appreciative of the tremendous work they do to enhance the lives of members in our region’s military community.”

Loyalist’s PLAR Portfolio Development program is designed for learners who wish to begin a career-planning process and prepare for entry into a College diploma program. The resulting portfolio can be submitted to program faculty for assessment against the requirements and learning outcomes of courses or modules.

“One of the key challenges military family members face, along with the unique pace of family relocation, separation and high-level risk associated with military service, is access to ongoing employment and educational opportunities,” said Tamara Kleinschmidt, Executive Director, Trenton Military Family Resource Centre. “Military spouses often experience career changes as a result of the military environment. Given the leadership role Loyalist has played with PLAR over the last 25 years, this partnership is a natural fit.”

The College and MFRC have worked together for more than a decade. Over the years, the partnership has grown to include Helping Entrepreneurs Reach Complete Success (HERCS) program with supports in the development of small businesses that can move with military spouses.
