Loyalist College launches its first Alumni Chapter in the Quinte Region

April 05, 2012

Loyalist
College is pleased to introduce the Quinte & District Alumni
Chapter, which will focus on bringing graduates closer to the College
community and to campus
life. Led by the Loyalist Alumni Association, the Chapter will be
formalized on Thursday, April 12th,
during an evening networking event, which graduates are encouraged to
attend. In addition to hosting reunions, the Loyalist
Alumni Association promotes the Online Communication Network and access
to Loyalist Employment & Career Advisors, among other Alumni
services.

“Today, Loyalist alumni, including me, number over 30,000 people,” says Loyalist President, Maureen Piercy.
“Another 1,200 students will
graduate this June with a post-secondary diploma; hundreds more will
earn certificates. The creation of a Quinte & District Alumni
Chapter is an important milestone in our 45-year history. It’s an
opportunity to reflect on how much our graduates have contributed
to strengthening communities and economies in our area, across the
province and our country. Through this new organization, we will
continue to grow together.”

The
Alumni Executive Committee, comprised of a group of elected graduates,
is committed to building fellowship among graduates and allegiance to
the College. Loyalist
elevates the wellbeing and vibrancy of the area as a whole with its
annual expenditure budget of $60.9 million. With all activities,
including student spending, the overall economic impact of the College
is estimated at $240 million annually. According to a
recent economic impact study, the College also generates 6,400 jobs in
the region.

The
demand for skilled workers will only increase as the baby boomer
generation retires. By 2031, the shortfall of workers across Ontario could rise as high as 1.8
million, according to Dr. Rick Miner’s report, People Without Jobs, Jobs Without People.
Dr. Miner projects that within five years; there will be 500,000
vacancies for skilled workers and almost 450,000 unskilled workers who
are unable to qualify for
those jobs. To bridge that gap, 77% of the workforce will need
post-secondary credentials by 2031, compared to 60% who hold them today.

Loyalist College
prepares students for a rewarding career by combining rigorous academic
standards with hands-on training from industry experts. Programs range
from apprenticeships and certificates to diplomas and post-graduate
studies. Loyalist offers more than 60 full-time programs and 77
university transfer agreements around the world. The best testament to
the College’s value is from students, 97 percent of whom
say they would recommend Loyalist to a friend. Loyalist is committed to
helping students find great jobs, as well as supporting and enhancing
the economic and social development of all individuals in its
communities.
