Loyalist College Hosts

February 22, 2013

On Thursday, February 21, Loyalist College hosted a presentation for “End Polio Now”, the international campaign to eradicate polio worldwide. The event was organized by the Loyalist College Rotaract Club and the Rotary Club of Quinte Sunrise and was attended by students and staff from the College.

Guest Bob Wallace, Past District Governor of District 7070, spoke about Rotary, Rotaract and his recent trip to India where he participated in a Polio immunization day. He explained the impact that Polio has in other areas of the world, and how Rotary is helping to eradicate the disease.

Prior to Bob’s presentation, Quinte Sunrise Rotarian Stuart Wright presented framed certificates of recognition to local MPs Daryl Kramp and Rick Norlock for the Federal Government’s financial support of the “End Polio Now” campaign.

“This is an initiative that we’re so blessed to be able to have such a wonderful partner in Rotary International,” said Prince Edward-Hastings MP Daryl Kramp. “Statistically, we can go back and see that there were 1,000 new cases of Polio per day, and now there are only around 600 per year. Rotary International has played a huge role and been a driving force, and the Federal Government recognizes collectively that we have a responsibility to not only influence but guide and support.”

“As a Rotarian, I’m proud to be part of the fight against Polio,” added Northumberland-Quinte West MP Rick Norlock.  “When you have more partners and more hands on deck, the job gets done much quicker. Thank you very much for this recognition.”

“End Polio Now” has received the support of many donors, including the Federal Government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as Rotary International.
