Loyalist College Former Board Chair Stuart Wright Recognized with Highest Provincial Honour for Seniors

November 04, 2014

Belleville, Ontario, November 3, 2014 – Loyalist College is pleased to congratulate former Board of Governors Chair Stuart Wright on being presented with an Ontario Senior Achievement Award, celebrating Ontario’s outstanding seniors. Presented each year by the Lieutenant Governor, the Senior Achievement Awards are the highest provincial honour for individuals over 65. Mr. Wright is one of 20 seniors who were recognized for significant contributions to their communities and the province on October 30 in Toronto.

The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, presented the award to Mr. Wright, of Carrying Place, who retired from a successful career in the telecommunications industry and was appointed to the Loyalist College Board of Governors in 2008. He served as Board Chair from 2010 to 2013 and then as Past Chair from 2013 to 2014, completing his term on August 31. Currently, Mr. Wright is a member of the Board of Directors for Quinte Healthcare Corporation, serving as Chair of the Human Resources Committee.

“I am deeply honoured with the award for service that I received from the hand of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,” said Mr. Wright. “While as a Rotarian I believe in the concept of ‘Service Above Self,’ I am thankful that my service to the community is recognized and appreciated.”

Recognizing the valuable contributions Ontario’s seniors make is part of Ontario’s Action Plan for Seniors and supports the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives and building a secure retirement savings plan.

“I’m very pleased and proud to congratulate Stuart on behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire College community,” said Loyalist College President and CEO Maureen Piercy. “As Board Chair, Stuart presided over significant achievements, including the Campaign for Loyalist College to complete and equip our Sustainable Skills, Life Sciences and Technology Centre, creating much-needed training opportunities for students to pursue careers in the skilled trades. It gives me great personal pleasure to see Stuart’s contributions recognized with such distinction. It was a great privilege to attend the ceremony and to see Her Honour Lieutenant-Governor Dowdeswell present the awards. We are very proud that Her Honour is the recipient of an honorary Loyalist College diploma, having addressed Convocation in 1998.”

Prior to his election as Chair of the Loyalist College Board of Governors, Mr. Wright served as Chair of the Finance, Corporate Services and Governance Committee, and was a member of the Executive Committee and the Audit Committee.  He also served as Director of the Loyalist College Foundation from 2008 until May 2014. Mr. Wright has more than 30 years’ experience in telecommunications with Bell Canada covering a wide range of activities, both domestically and internationally, in sales and marketing.  He worked in Saudi Arabia, seconded to Saudi Telecoms, where he interfaced with the military and security agencies regarding their voice and data communication needs and later for Bell Canada International (BCI) in a new business development role in the Gulf region of the Middle East.  He then spent two years in Malaysia where he established a joint venture between Telekom Malaysia and BCI designed to sell, develop and support computer applications for the telecom industry before returning to Canada to take up a senior role at Bell.  Mr. Wright is a member of the Rotary Club of Quinte Sunrise, and is a Paul Harris Fellow.  He has served as a Director on the Board of the Air Force Museum of Canada and as a Trustee on its Foundation.
