Loyalist College Bancroft Campus Introduces Exciting New Program Options for North Hastings Community

June 27, 2014

Bancroft, Ontario, June 27, 2014 – The Loyalist College Bancroft campus is pleased to introduce a number of exciting new initiatives to Bancroft and the surrounding area. During the upcoming months the College will offer: Destination: Employment, Career and College Prep, Summer Arts Workshops and Summer Camps for Kids and Teens.

The first initiative, Destination: Employment, is funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment as part of the Youth Employment Fund. Composed of three phases: Construction, Foodservice and Retail, each in-class section is three weeks in length and available to individuals between the ages of 15 and 29 who are underemployed and not attending school. Students graduating from the program will have seven certifications, including qualifications such as Smart Serve and CPR, a definite résumé advantage. Industry experts will share their experience and knowledge as guest speakers. The program is free and those successfully completing the course will receive a $500 bonus.

Career and College Prep offers a high school equivalency program. Students can enrol at the beginning of any month, so those interested can move forward immediately. Successful students meet the academic requirements for entry into other College programs. Subjects include mathematics, communications, computers and science, and may be arranged in any combination that a student needs. Students wishing to prepare themselves to write GED exams can do so in the College Prep program.

As an introductory Summer Arts program, the Bancroft campus, in partnership with the Bancroft Art Gallery, is offering five weekend workshops in July. The creative forums will provide opportunities such as drum making, the making of mosaic tables and mixed media collages. Kids and teens can make exciting new plans for summer camp. During July, Loyalist is offering one-week camps in: Prospecting, Rock Hunting and More, Colour Me Acrylic and Wilderness Adventure – Survival in the Bush.

“At the Loyalist Bancroft campus we try to work closely with the community so that we are able to provide relevant training and learning opportunities,” says Warren Gee, Director, Community and Employment Services, Loyalist College. “We’re excited to be developing programs that address serious employment focused goals and to be able to balance them with the creativity, adventure and fun that come with the summer arts and kids camps.”
