Loyalist College Announces Three Athletic Achievements

February 10, 2012

Loyalist College is proud to announce three Athletic achievements, which build on the College’s commitment to providing athletic opportunities that foster students’ intellectual, personal and physical development.

First, Loyalist student Kyle Donnan broke another record in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) men’s volleyball this season, setting the highest mark for career points in the Loyalist Lancers’ 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-19) road victory over George Brown College on Friday, February 3. With his nine points against the Huskies, Donnan achieved 911 offensive points for his career, four more than previous OCAA record holder Ryan Talsma (907) of Redeemer, during 2009-10. Donnan, who plays left side position, is a fifth year student, currently in the Public Relations (Post Graduate) program. Kyle and his teammates will play their final regular season game this Sunday at 3 p.m. against Georgian College, following the women’s game against Georgian at 1 p.m.

Second, the Loyalist Athletic Department is hosting MegaHoops, a basketball skills clinic this Saturday, February 11th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Loyalist College. Presented in partnership with Ontario Basketball and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, MegaHoops allows children aged eight to 12 to participate in a variety of skills stations. The clinicians, including coaches Richard Whitfield and Chris Eligh and several varsity athletes, will lead the group of approximately 30 children. With registration, the children receive lunch and tickets to the Loyalist varsity basketball games on Saturday afternoon, including the women at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m., both against Seneca College.

Third, the Grand Re-Opening of the Loyalist College Fitness Centre is on Thursday, February 16. The Loyalist Student Government provided funding for the bright centre, which boasts a new line of Olympic, Power Lifting and Cardio equipment. The improvements were made based on input from students through surveys.
