LOYALIST COLLEGE ADDRESSES REGIONAL HEALTH CARE NEED WITH NEW MEDICAL RADIATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

December 14, 2023

Belleville, ON, Dec. 14, 2023 – Loyalist College is pleased to announce the addition of a new Medical Radiation Technology program, scheduled to take its first cohort of students in Fall 2024. This Ontario College Advanced Diploma program, developed in direct response to needs identified by Quinte Health, will address the significant demand for skilled medical radiation technologists in the Quinte region. This new program represents a crucial step in enhancing local health care services and reflects Loyalist’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the health care industry.

Spanning an intensive six semesters of study over just two years, the Medical Radiation Technology program allows students to fast-track their training, meeting the needs of the local workforce sooner than traditional three-year advanced diploma programs. Loyalist’s small class sizes and dedicated faculty will thoroughly prepare students for success in the field of diagnostic imaging, and graduates will be able to secure employment in a variety of settings including hospitals, medical clinics, radiology facilities, and cancer treatment clinics.

The curriculum will promote expertise in both technical imaging and patient care. Students will engage in extensive classroom learning, lab work, and placements in various health care settings. This learner-centred approach will equip graduates with the skills to effectively serve a diverse patient population.

Mark Kirkpatrick, President and CEO of Loyalist College, emphasizes the significance of the program: “The introduction of the Medical Radiation Technology program is a strategic and direct response to health care needs identified by our community, notably our partners at Quinte Health and through Health PULSE. By launching this program, Loyalist College is taking a significant step towards building a strong, local health care workforce. We are committed to ensuring that the transition of students into graduates of this new program is smooth and efficient, fulfilling our role in quickly and effectively cultivating local health care talent to meet our region’s current and future needs.”

The program also serves as a new educational avenue for students already enrolled in allied health science programs and those considering a career shift within or into health care. This initiative aligns with the college’s mission of producing career-ready graduates who are prepared to meet the evolving demands of the job market.

“Quinte Health’s partnership with Loyalist College has never been stronger, working together to support local health care and strong vibrant communities,” says Stacey Daub, President and CEO, Quinte Health. “Loyalist is proving itself to be a college destination for a growing number of health care professions and their proactive addition of a Medical Radiation Technology program will not only strengthen Quinte Health’s ability to provide high quality, advanced diagnostics close to home, it will also provide new and exciting career opportunities for our community. We are very grateful to Loyalist College and the Government of Ontario for making this local program a reality for our community.”
