Loyalist Accepts Generous Donation from The Retired Teachers Of Ontario

May 02, 2012

Belleville, Ontario, May 2, 2012 – Loyalist College is honoured to accept a generous contribution of $11,652 from the Retired Teachers of Ontario, District 19, Hastings and Prince Edward District. With matching funds through the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) program, an endowment fund totaling over $23,000 will be established to provide financial assistance for Loyalist students.

“We are investing in Loyalist today because the College is training the next generation of skilled workers who will be instrumental in supporting the Quinte region of tomorrow,” said Janet Marissen, President of District 19, Retired Teachers of Ontario. “As educators, we know firsthand the difference that formal training makes in improving the lives of young people by helping them to reach their potential.”

The purpose of the endowment is to provide financial support to first year students registered at Loyalist College in education-related programs of study, including Early Childhood Education, Social Service Worker, and Child and Youth Worker. The bursary will also be available to students in programs that offer support to seniors, such as Gerontology and Fitness & Health Promotion.  The bursary is available to graduates of publicly funded high schools in the Hastings and Prince Edward District.  To qualify, students must demonstrate community involvement and financial need.

“We truly appreciate the generous financial support of the Retired Teachers of Ontario – District 19,” said Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy. “It helps us to meet our goal of positioning students for success in the classrooms as well as in their future jobs when they will contribute to the development of our communities. These types of bursaries provide strong incentive in recruiting students, which helps to support the College overall.”

Loyalist College prepares students for a rewarding career by combining rigorous academic standards with hands-on training from industry experts. Programs range from apprenticeships and certificates to diplomas and post-graduate studies. Loyalist offers more than 60 full-time programs and 77 university transfer agreements around the world. One of the best testaments to the College’s value is from graduates who find jobs, as evidenced in the annual College Key Performance Indicator for Graduate Employment, which is consistently above the provincial average. Loyalist is committed to helping students find great jobs, as well as supporting and enhancing the economic and social development of all individuals in its communities.
