Graduates

Over 1,600 students graduated from Loyalist College at Convocation ceremonies held on June 11 and 12.  Graduates received diplomas, certificates and applied degrees from programs in the Schools of Health and Human Studies, Biosciences, Business and Management Studies, Media Studies, Architecture and Building Sciences, Skills Training, Continuing Education and the Centre for Justice Studies.

One hundred and twenty-eight awards were presented during the three Convocation ceremonies. They were provided by private donors, business and industry, as well as by foundations and community organizations, as well as the Loyalist College Foundation. 

Eight new awards were presented for the first time at this year’s ceremonies.

  • The Fitness and Health Promotion Faculty Award was presented to Melissa Gallant-Belleghem, a graduating student from the program with the highest overall cumulative average who has contributed positively to her program both in a curricular and extra-curricular fashion.
  • The Recreation and Leisure Services Faculty Award was presented to Tiffany Day and Lucas McGriskin, graduating students from the program with the highest overall cumulative averages who contributed positively to the program both in a curricular and extra-curricular fashion.
  • The Doug Smith Graduate Award, for outstanding academic achievement in the Child and Youth Worker program, was presented to Erin Carnegie. The award was established to honour Doug Smith who is retiring from teaching at Loyalist this year.
  • The Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors Award has been established for a graduating student of the Child and Youth Worker program who demonstrates outstanding skills in child and youth care during field placement.  The first recipient is Elizabeth Dall.
  • The Kate Eves Memorial Award, for a Child and Youth Worker program graduate who is innovative, energetic and dedicated, has demonstrated a high standard in fieldwork, and has earned the respect of their classmates, was presented to Jody Williams.
  • The Janet McGinnis Award, for a Child and Youth Worker program graduate, was presented to Alison Wray for her strong, selfless, supportive and lively ways, and as a graduate who has earned the respect of classmates.
  • The G.P. Hunt Sports Award was presented to Gregory Warren for his attitude, effort, improvement, abilities, teamwork and achievement of learning outcomes in the Sports Journalism program.
  • The Steven Hope Memorial Award was presented to Carrie Bulgajewski as a graduating student with an 80% average or higher and the highest marks in the Business Communications/Computer Applications courses. This award was established in honour of Steven Hope, a faculty member in the Business Administration program, who passed away last year.

A number of other awards were presented at Convocation, including the Herbert Young Scholarship and the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award.

Kyle MacKenzie, a graduate of the Public Relations program, received the Herbert Young Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and participation in College life.  Mr. Young was the President of Loyalist College from 1970 to 1988.

The Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Mr. James Harrington, a 1969 graduate of the Loyalist College Electronic Engineering Technician program. In February, James Harrington was one of six individuals presented with the Premier’s Award by the Hon. John Milloy, Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. Throughout his career Mr. Harrington has followed his passion for research and exploration as an electronics and mechanical product designer. Since 1970 he has developed research and exploration equipment for astrophysics, geophysics and oceanographic applications. He now resides in Victoria, B.C., and operates a company called AGO Environmental Electronics. Today he is recognized worldwide for the design and fabrication of Canada’s first successful fuel cell-assisted sailboat, the Sloop Jim D.
