Connecting Loyalist Students with Services

On Wednesday, September 11th, Student Success Services and the Loyalist Career Centre teamed up to host a Getting Connected Fair. During the two-hour event, held in the newly renovated Dining Hall on campus, nearly 300 students took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the services and clubs available at the College.

“This is the second Getting Connected Fair we’ve held this year at Loyalist,” said Francine Short, office coordinator of Career and Alumni Services. “We decided to hold two events so that we could interact with new students on Orientation Day and then, during the second week of classes, reach out to both new and returning students. Our goal is to make sure they are aware of the services available on campus to help them be successful during the school year.”

More than a dozen on-campus services and clubs were in attendance including the Career Centre, Student Success Services, Athletics, Financial Aid, the Aboriginal Resource Centre, Enactus Loyalist College, the Loyalist College Choir, and more.

“I stopped by the Getting Connected Fair because I wanted to see what kind of support was available for students,” said first-year Developmental Service Worker student Amanda Gain. “While I was here, I learned a lot about Enactus and Student Government. I’m thinking about applying to be a first-year leader through Student Government. I also learned I can take distance studies in the summer to lighten my load in the Fall, which I had no idea was an option.”

Off-campus services such as Volunteer and Information Quinte and the Belleville Chamber of Commerce also participated in the event.

“I’m here to help students become better-oriented with the City of Belleville,” said Luc Fournier, an Environmental Technician and Public Relations grad and membership development coordinator for the Belleville and District Chamber of Commerce. “Students from out of town can learn more about the resources we have to help them get around town and what the city has to offer. The Chamber of Commerce is striving to make a better connection with the students at Loyalist.”

The Getting Connected Fair is just one of many initiatives that the College has provided to welcome students and help them settle in and enjoy a successful year at Loyalist.
