Funding Available for Three New Loyalist Program Options

May 15, 2009

Loyalist College is offering new delivery options for their Personal Support Worker, Construction Renovation Techniques and Driver Training programs. Students will benefit from increased flexibility and the fact that the programs are eligible for funding through the Ontario Government’s Second Career initiative and the Ontario Skills Development Fund.

The 38-week Personal Support Worker program is offered at a number of locations including Rama, Bancroft, Tweed and Belleville, with start dates ranging from June until October. It is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide personal care and home management services to clients in both community and institutional settings. Students receive instruction in theory and laboratory practice, as well as CPR and first aid training, and benefit from a work placement. Graduates are able to begin working as Personal Support Workers immediately upon completion of the program.

The Construction Renovation Techniques program is offered at the College’s main campus in Belleville. The next session begins June 1st. Through hands-on training and projects, students develop many of the skills to build a new home or renovate an old one. They learn to work from blueprints, produce basic sketches and create computer-assisted designs using AutoCAD. All aspects of carpentry are taught, including base footings and framing, interior and exterior finishing, and fine finishing techniques. Students hone their skills on a major home construction or renovation project. Graduates are prepared to work in residential or commercial construction and renovation.

The Driver Training program offers AZ, DZ and Z Endorsement and Adjustment Training. The AZ program is seven weeks. DZ Training is a four-week program. The Z Endorsement and Adjustment Training are included in these two programs or can be taken separately over a two-day period. The next course begins in Bancroft on May 25th followed by a July session in Belleville and there are more scheduled for the fall. Vehicles are provided for the road tests.

“Students who successfully complete their programs receive a Loyalist certificate,” said Tom Malloy, Dean of Skills Training, Access and Continuing Education. “These training options have been met with a very positive response. They develop skills needed in today’s workforce and their eligibility for funding from Second Career and the Ontario Skills Development Fund makes a tremendous difference to many people wanting to retrain and expand their career opportunities.”

Those interested in registering for one of these programs can do so in person or by calling (613) 969-1913, ext. 2260.
