Award-Winning Broadcast Journalist Robert Fisher Delivers Convocation Address to the Schools of Media, Arts and Design and Continuing Education

Belleville, Ontario, June 6, 2014 – At the final 2014 annual Convocation Ceremony held on Friday, June 6th, Loyalist College proudly presented 889 graduates in the School of Media, Arts and Design and the School of Continuing Education with advanced diplomas, diplomas, certificates, and graduate certificates. In total, 2,070 Loyalist students graduated during the four Convocation Ceremonies, held over two days.

The Convocation address was delivered by Mr. Robert Fisher, an award-winning broadcast journalist with more than 30 years of experience in public and private radio and television. He keeps CBC listeners up-to-date on what is happening in the world on CBC Radio One’s regional program “Here and Now,” and also acts as a political analyst for CBC Radio in Windsor. Before his radio career, Mr. Fisher was a Senior News Anchor and Political Affairs Specialist for the Global Television Network and spent 10 years with CBC Television, reporting on national, provincial and municipal politics. Along with his responsibilities at CBC, he teaches Journalism Law and Ethics at Centennial College in Toronto.

“Cherish this moment,” said Mr. Fisher to graduates. “It is important. It represents the culmination of a lot of hard work. No one will ever be able to take this day away from you. That piece of paper you’re going to get will say so. For those of you who have chosen journalism, I am here to ask you to make it more than a job. I occasionally say to myself: I get paid to do this work? I have covered stories big and small. I have travelled the world – this great province and country – talking to people about the issues that matter to them. I have interviewed Princes, Premiers and Prime Ministers, great authors – First Nations chiefs. In short, in my more than 40 years of journalism, I consider myself a lucky guy. I know and I hope that someday you’ll be able to say the same thing. Congratulations. And the very best to you in years that are ahead of you!”

In recognition of his extensive experience and contributions as a journalist and broadcaster in both the public and private sectors, Mr. Fisher was presented with an Honorary Diploma in Applied Arts & Technology.
