First Year Enrolment Up At Loyalist College

September 14, 2012

Belleville, Ontario, September 13, 2012 – Enrolment remains strong at Loyalist College this year, with more than 3,000 students at its Belleville and Bancroft campuses. The intake of first-year students grew by two percent over last September, creating high levels of demand for residences. Loyalist’s recent residence expansion has increased capacity to 580 in the on-campus residence village.

Programs in the School of Skilled Trades & Technology are among the most popular, with Automotive and Welding Techniques at capacity. Participation in Loyalist’s renowned School of Media, Art & Design is also up as a result of innovative new programs such as Graphic Design. As both the Skills and Media areas of study are emerging labour markets, Loyalist graduates of these programs will be well positioned to address industry demands with their acquired skills.

“In the last few weeks, the Loyalist College community has been buzzing with energy and activity as we welcomed all students and helped them to settle in for a successful semester,” said Loyalist President Maureen Piercy. “One of the top reasons they choose Loyalist, according to our applicants, is the excellence of our teaching. Our personalized approach to supporting student success is what attracts new students and produces exceptional graduates.”

Loyalist’s Aboriginal student population remains strong.  Ten percent of the College’s full-time enrolment is comprised of students who self-identify with having Aboriginal heritage. International enrolment also continues to grow.

Loyalist provides many flexible options for lifelong learning. Daytime part-time registration continues to grow each year, and participation in Continuing Education programs is very strong. Registration through the fall term is projected to reach last year’s results of 5,300 registrations.

“It’s going to be another great year at Loyalist College,” said President Maureen Piercy.

Loyalist College prepares students for a rewarding career by combining rigorous academic standards with hands-on training from industry experts. Programs range from apprenticeships and certificates to diplomas and post-graduate studies. Loyalist offers more than 60 full-time programs and 77 university transfer agreements around the world. The best testament to the College’s value is from students, 97 percent of whom say they would recommend Loyalist to a friend. Loyalist is committed to helping students find great jobs, as well as supporting and enhancing the economic and social development of all individuals in its communities.
