Loyalist College invites rugby fans to attend the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II Championship Men’s Rugby game on Wednesday, November 4th at 3:30 p.m. Barring an upset at Saturday’s game, the Lancers will be playing Georgian College for the championship. An awards and medal presentation will follow the game.
Larry Cook, co-coach of the team, praised the hard work that the players have put forth this year. “Through a strong team effort we have had a very good season. This team has a lot of depth, not just as good athletes, but also as experienced rugby players. They are organized and prepared and I know they will be at their best.”
“I’ve been playing rugby for over 20 years and playing as a Lancer has been totally invigorating,” said Sean McMurtry, a first-year Nursing student and graduate of the College’s Pre-Health program. “It is the commitment of our coaches Larry Cook and Rob Cooke that has enabled us to be the team that we are. We’ve got a lot of new faces this year that have brought youthfulness, energy and talent, and almost three-quarters of them plan to return next year. That will be amazing to build on. Playing our final game on our home field is the perfect way to end our season.”
“There is a great rugby following in this community and we invite everyone to come and be a part of our cheering section on Wednesday,” said Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation. “The Lancers are also using this event to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and encourage people to ‘think pink’ when dressing for the game. The rugby team has had a great season and we’d love to have a strong show of support here at home for the championship game.”
