Loyalist College Hosts Girls-Only Tradewise Event on October 24

October 23, 2012

Grades nine and ten students try their hand at skilled trades in a fun and supportive environment

As skilled trades advance technologically and the labour pool shrinks with shifting demographics, Canadian employers are increasingly turning to non-traditional labour sources such as women.

To encourage girls to consider the opportunities and benefits of a future in skilled trades, Loyalist College is hosting the third annual Tradewise event on Wednesday, October 24th. More than 55 female students in grades nine and ten are expected to attend from 11 schools, representing the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.

The East Central Ontario Training Board is supporting the event by providing transportation and lunch, as well as promotional and material costs. Students will participate in a variety of fun activities organized by the Culinary, Automotive, Manufacturing, Welding, Electrical, Surveying, Esthetics and Construction Renovation programs. A number of the interactive sessions will be led by women students and faculty in the programs.
