OSAP offers two types of funding:
- Grants: money you normally don’t have to pay back, unless there is a change in your status or assessment
- Loans: money that you need to repay when you finish school
When you apply for OSAP, you are automatically considered for both grants and loans, but if you would like to receive only the grant funding, you can choose that option after submitting your application.
Please note: Loans from OSAP are not available before the start of classes and students are expected to pay tuition deposits to be eligible for registration.
OSAP eligibility
If you are an Ontario resident, you may apply for full-time or part-time OSAP, depending on your course load. If you are an out-of-province resident, you may apply for financial assistance through the appropriate government department of your home province.
You may apply for full-time or part-time OSAP, depending on your course load.
- To be eligible for full-time OSAP funding, you must be registered in a minimum of 60 percent course load each semester (Fall/Winter, no averaging course loads) either by hours or courses.
- If you are registered in 20 percent to 59percent of a full semester course load, you can apply for part-time OSAP funding.
- Part-time OSAP covers tuition and textbooks, but not living expenses.
- You must apply every semester for part-time OSAP.
- If you withdraw and/or do not successfully complete all your courses when funded by part-time OSAP, you will need to complete a successful semester of studies before you can re-apply for part-time OSAP.
If you are registered with OSAP as a student with a permanent disability, you are eligible for full time funding at a 40 percent course load per semester (rather than 60 percent).
