A suspension of operations means that regular college operations temporarily stop or are modified at one or more Loyalist College locations. This may include classes, services and activities delivered in person, virtually or remotely. Essential services, such as campus security and residence support, continue.

Weather and travel conditions can vary across our region. Students and employees should consider their local conditions and personal safety when deciding whether it is safe to travel. You will not be required to undertake travel you reasonably determine is unsafe.

Loyalist considers the weather forecast, road conditions, public transportation and whether campus buildings and grounds can be safely accessed and maintained. The college may suspend operations at one or more locations when conditions make it unsafe to continue.
School bus cancellations do not automatically mean that Loyalist classes are cancelled. Always check the college’s announcements for updates about your location.
Loyalist will make every reasonable effort to announce a suspension by 6:30 a.m. for the start of the day; 3 p.m. for evening classes and activities; and 3 p.m. on the last working day before a weekend or holiday for activities scheduled during that period.
If conditions change during the day, updates will be shared as soon as possible.

In-person classes and labs at the affected location will not take place during the suspension. Live online classes (also called synchronous classes) are also cancelled. Asynchronous classes, such as OntarioLearn classes, are not tied to a date and time and are not affected by inclement weather.
Check Canvas announcements for instructions from your professors about your classes, assignments and assessments. Your professors may also share updates by email.
In situations where the college has not suspended operations but you decide it is unsafe to travel, stay home and email your professor as soon as possible. You will not be penalized for a weather-related absence or late arrival.
Check Canvas for instructions and take part in remote learning when you can and when your professor provides that option. If internet access, technology or other circumstances prevent you from participating, let your professor know so they can work with you on alternatives.
Approved accessibility accommodations also apply when learning moves online, although they may look a little different to fit the online environment.
Your professor will share the revised plan through Canvas. Depending on your course, this may mean a rescheduled class or lab, an alternative learning activity, or a new assessment date or deadline.
If an in-person session needs to be rescheduled, the program will try to find another date within the term. If you cannot attend that session, contact your professor to discuss alternatives.
If your placement agency is open, you are expected to attend if you can travel safely. Check for updates from your placement agency and professor.
If weather makes it unsafe to attend, email your placement contact and professor before your scheduled start time. You will not be penalized for a weather-related absence, but you may need to make up hours or missed assessments to meet your course requirements.

Campus events at an affected location will be cancelled, postponed or rescheduled, unless the college approves an exception. The event organizer will share updates with participants and attendees. Check those updates before travelling.
If the college remains open but you cannot travel safely, or need to leave early, contact your manager as soon as possible to agree on a work or attendance arrangement.
If operations are suspended at your assigned location, you are not expected to work on campus or perform your regular duties remotely unless you provide an essential service or have been specifically authorized to work. Follow any directions from your manager.
