2SLGBTQ+ resource guide
Whether you grew up around the corner from Loyalist College or are new to the area, it can be challenging to find services or spaces that are safe and inclusive of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. To help, Ashley Perna, Paralegal student, put together a guide to help you locate local retailers, organizations and service providers who prioritize the safety, security and inclusion of all 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, including Loyalist College students.
About the author
Ashley J. Perna is a dedicated second-year Paralegal student with a passion for empowering her peers. Beyond the classroom, she spends her time at Loyalist College working as a peer tutor and note-taker. Ashley firmly believes that knowledge is power and that it’s important for all students, including 2SLGBTQ+ community members, to have a safe and supportive educational environment.
When she’s not hitting the books or volunteering with others, you can find Ashley performing stand-up comedy, eagerly awaiting the next Arkells concert, or watching way too many Law and Order re-runs.
BIPOC resource guide
The BIPOC Resource Guide aims to centralize and provide easy access to essential supports and services for members of our diverse communities. Whether you’re seeking assistance with food security, health care, education or legal matters, Taranpreet Kaur, Computer Systems Technician student, has designed this guide to empower you with the information you need to thrive.
About the author
Taranpreet (tə-run-PREET) Kaur is a Computer Systems Technician student at Loyalist College, originally from Punjab, India. Arriving in Canada in August 2023, Taranpreet anticipated an easy transition, planning to live with her sister in the GTA area. However, due to the challenges of commuting from the GTA to Belleville, she made the tough decision to live independently. Her parents and sister were initially worried, knowing how difficult it can be to start from scratch in a new city, especially in a different country.
With her sister’s support and the kindness of her housemates and landlords in Belleville, Taranpreet quickly adapted to her new life. This experience deepened her understanding of how challenging it can be for new students to start fresh in an unfamiliar place, especially without family nearby. Motivated by this, Taranpreet is committed to helping other students through the BIPOC resource guide, hoping it will be a valuable tool for those navigating similar challenges. Beyond her academic pursuits, Taranpreet enjoys connecting with others, always ready to lend a helping hand and support her community.
