EDI initiatives

At Loyalist, we are committed to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across our college community. Discover how we're creating meaningful change through initiatives that champion equity, celebrate diversity and promote a culture of belonging for all.

Recent achievements

  • We had an external firm perform an EDI audit to help us understand the current state of the college through an EDI lens and outline recommendations on areas that need to be addressed/improved.
  • We onboarded a human rights consultant to help us review policies and develop a plan for a human rights office at Loyalist.
  • We advocated for a revision of policy FIN 504 to include a dependent care benefit, providing support to employees with dependents in the event where they must incur care expenses due to business travel needs. *Note: This benefit is approved and in effect but is currently in the process of being written into the formal policy.
  • We are continually working with college leadership groups to assess and measure EDI awareness and leadership.
  • We hired two EDI student staff to perform a gap analysis of services and support, and to create resource guides for the 2SLGBTQ+ and BIPOC student groups.
  • We launched an interim EDI Committee for 2024 that represents diverse groups across the institution including students, staff, faculty, unions, etc.
  • EDI staff serve on several external boards and committees in order to stay connected to the needs of the communities we serve.
  • We conducted a survey to assess washroom inclusivity and accessibility across the college. The results from this survey are being used to create a formal report to influence upcoming washroom renovation plans.

What we’re working on

  • We are establishing a human rights office at Loyalist, spearheaded by a dedicated Human Rights and Conflict Support Manager.
  • We are working toward a new policy framework to ensure policies are trauma-informed and anti-oppressive, in alignment with new government requirements for anti-hate and mental health policies. This also aligns with Loyalist College’s values.
  • We will launch an open call for nominations to form the 2025 EDI Committee.
  • We continue to partner with Institutional Research and Human Resources to establish a framework for EDI data collection, analysis and reporting.
  • We have plans to onboard temporary assistance with EDI and intercultural education needs, delivery and evaluation.
  • We will roll out an EDI Conversation Series to showcase inspiring individuals in our community from many walks of life who have navigated various barriers to achieve their goals.

Accessibility

Loyalist College is working toward a barrier-free future. As part of the college’s capital plan, this washroom facility is slated for renovation to make it universally accessible for all students.
