This program is designed to broaden your knowledge while developing career-specific skills. 

Experience a range of topics by completing two electives, one in first semester and one in second semester, choosing courses in Business or courses offered through OntarioLearn. Graduates have the option of continuing their studies in a diploma or advanced diploma program, or entering the workforce directly with this post-secondary credential.

This program is ideal for high school and mature students who have or will earn an Ontario Secondary School diploma with workplace preparation credits. 

How you'll learn

The General Arts and Science – Workplace program offers a well-rounded experience through a mix of group assignments and class activities. Work with a faculty advisor each semester to customize your timetable.

Through Health and Equitable Learning, students will have access to peer tutoring, note taking, and assistance with math and writing. Career planning is also available to help students navigate their interests in different vocations, based on elective courses in Business or offered through OntarioLearn.

Courses

WRIT1010 Communications 1

This course focuses on reading and writing skills required for workplace competence. Students build skills in paragraph structure and development, grammatical and mechanical editing, reading comprehension and summary writing, as well as APA style.

COMP1004 Digital Foundations: Word, PowerPoint and Excel Basics

This course provides intermediate-level computer users with more advanced instruction in PowerPoint and word processing. Through practical lab experience, students become more efficient operating current workplace software applications.

GASP1008 Integrated Learning 1

The focus of this course is to enhance academic success and introduce strategies for lifelong learning application. Students will participate in curriculum-based tutorials, identify and apply student success supports, and participate in class discussions for enhanced personal development.

MATH1042 Workplace Math 1

This course reviews mathematical concepts and basic arithmetic skills for practical application: money management, scheduling, budgeting, measurement and calculation.

COUN1027 Workplace Relations

Students will prepare for employment by developing a career plan, identify and complete workplace certifications such as WHMIS, CPR, Smart Serve and others. Content will also address job search strategies such as résumé and portfolio development, interview skills and presenting a positive image.

GASV1010 Vocational Elective 1

Students will choose a vocational elective; available courses are designed to assess the potential of an occupational area.

GASV1014 Vocational Elective 2

Students will choose a vocational elective; available courses are designed to assess the potential of an occupational area.

WRIT1011 Communications 2

This course expands the focus on reading and writing skills for the workplace. Students expand their writing skills to more sophisticated paragraph structure and development; grammatical and mechanical editing; report writing and organization; and APA style documentation and format.

COMP1005 Computer Applications

This course familiarizes students with current business application software and social media tools.

GASP1007 Integrated Learning 2

Students will receive additional faculty mentoring to support academic skill development.

COUN1028 Job Readiness

Students will prepare for employment by developing a career plan, identify and complete workplace certifications such as WHMIS, CPR, Smart Serve and others. Content will also address job search strategies such as résumé and portfolio development, interview skills and presenting a positive image.

This Loyalist College graduate attributes course will help shape your perspectives, broaden your understanding of important issues affecting our societies today, and equip you with invaluable knowledge and skills that will inform your ability to influence your community in a meaningful and impactful way. By exploring topics such as cultural competency, Indigenous education, entrepreneurship, sustainability, health and wellness, and ecological literacy, you'll be equipped with a powerful toolkit that extends far beyond the classroom.

  • Full-Time Ancillary Fees:* $1,367
