LOYALIST COLLEGE OPENS ‘THE FAILSAFE’ TO SUPPORT TECH-BASED INNOVATION ON CAMPUS

April 19, 2023

Belleville, ON, April 19, 2023  – Advancing its commitment to equip the regional workforce with future-focused skills and experiences, Loyalist College proudly unveils The FailSafe, a new technology-based learning environment and makerspace on campus. The FailSafe provides students, industry and community partners access to state-of-the-art equipment in a supportive environment where they can experiment and create using emerging technologies.

“Loyalist’s student-centred and supportive learning environment ensures learners progress through their programs and develop new skills while feeling confident about the network of educators and industry experts behind them,” said Mark Kirkpatrick, Loyalist College President and CEO. “In engineering, a fail-safe is a design feature that prevents damage in the event of failure. We named this new learning environment on campus the ‘FailSafe’ because it’s designed to be a safe space for students to test their limits and innovate – without the fear of failure holding them back.”

Students, staff and industry partners attended a ribbon cutting on April 17 to celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art facilities. The event began with an opening address from President Kirkpatrick, followed by remarks by Student Government President Ravi Patel and Colby Vankoughnett, a student in Loyalist’s Electrical Engineering Technician – Industrial program.

Guests had the opportunity to view the array of technology available in the space, including 3D printers, CO2 laser cutters/engravers, recording booths, PC gaming stations, design computers and more.

“Emerging technologies continue to reshape industry practices and create exciting new careers,” said President Kirkpatrick. “As Loyalist completes capital renovations and facility upgrades, we are building opportunities for students, local businesses and community members to access cutting-edge equipment and services right here in the Bay of Quinte.”
