Co-operative Education

What is Co-op at Loyalist College in Toronto?

Co-op is a partnership involving students, employers, and Loyalist College in Toronto that provides students with work experience to complement their in-class training.  Your co-op experience will consist of:

  • Academic experience
  • Paid
  • Full-time work
  • Related to your program of study
  • Completed in the last semester of the program

Employers hire qualified and motivated students to fulfill short-term and future employment needs. As a student, you gain valuable, paid, on-the-job experience and build networks to enhance employment options.

A Co-op work placement will allow students to:

  • Learn on-the-job.
  • Build networks and industry specific contacts.
  • Explore their potential career.
  • Earn money.
  • Gain Canadian work experience.
  • Acquire additional industry specific skills.

Career Services is available to support you in the entire co-op process, including the interviewing, hiring, and onboarding steps to ensure you have an excellent experience. To determine when students from each program are available for co-op, please refer to our Programs Page.

Our recruitment cycle follows specific timelines for posting jobs, interviews and job offers. Please visit our critical dates page link, Devant for our job postings and co-op classes for further information.

Students may find their own co-op jobs and submit written offers from employers to the Career Services team by day 5 of Week 12 of the semester prior to the work term. These offers will be vetted for academic rigour and employer suitability using a set of established criteria. If self-generated offers do not meet the criteria by the deadline, students will then be directed to apply to a college pre-approved co-op posted on the Job Board. Following Day 5 Week 12 deadline students may no longer submit self-generated offers.

Students may also choose to apply directly to jobs pre-approved by the college and posted on the Job Board that meet both the academic and employer requirements established by the college. Students may submit written co-op offers from pre-approved jobs until Week 1, Day 5 of the work term semester.

Students participating in the Cooperative Education program must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in a Co-op program
  • Have a valid study permit and Co-op Work Permit
  • Complete all required courses for all terms preceding scheduled work term
  • Maintain the minimum GPA and course requirements as established by the academic department, and outlined on the Co-op program page. Achievement of the minimum requirements does not guarantee participation in co-op.
  • Adhere to the Student Code of Conduct at all times

Co-op students must also complete, review and sign as required all co-op documentation included in the LCIT Co-op package which will be shared with students after they have received an approved Co-op job.
