Part 1: Donning the Particulate N95 Respirator
  • Don the respirator according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Adjust the straps to the location on the head indicated in the manufacturer’s guidelines. Normally the top strap will go above the ears, positioned on the back of the head and the bottom strap will go over the head and positioned around the neck, below the ears.
  • Tighten the nose-clip by using the index fingers of both hands.
Part 2: Negative Pressure User Seal Checks
  • Lightly place one or both hands completely over the respirator.
  • Inhale gently.
  • The user seal check is successful if the respirator collapses slightly towards the face.
  • If the respirator does not collapse, verify that nothing is obstructing the seal, adjust the straps and nose-clip, as indicated above, and repeat the user seal check.
  • If an adequate seal cannot be achieved, repeat with another size or type of respirator.
Part 3: Positive Pressure User Seal Checks
  • Lightly place one or both hands completely over the respirator.
  • Exhale gently.
  • The user seal check is successful if the respirator bulges slightly away from the face.
  • If the respirator does not bulge, verify that nothing is obstructing the seal, adjust the straps and nose-clip, as indicated above, and repeat the user seal check.
  • If an adequate seal cannot be achieved, repeat with another size or brand of respirator.
