The Electrician Apprenticeship at Loyalist college could be the perfect next step for you.

The demand for licensed electricians continues to grow as infrastructure, residential construction, and industrial sectors expand, and many experienced tradespeople approach retirement. Electricians work in residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional settings, playing a critical role in the installation, maintenance, and safe operation of electrical systems. They contribute to the safety and functionality of buildings and equipment by:  

  • Installing electrical wiring, lighting, power distribution, and control systems. 
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical faults using specialized tools and testing equipment.  
  • Maintaining, repairing, and upgrading electrical systems to meet safety standards and operational requirements. 
  • Reading and interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, and building plans.

*Note: Both 309A and 442A apprentices take the same Level 1, 2 & 3 during their journey, but then take a separate Level 4 course that is specific to their trade.

Level 1 will be delivered in 2026/27. 

Level 1 & 2 will be delivered in 2027/28 

Levels 1, 2 & 3 will be delivered in 2028/29 

Level 4 for 309A as well as Level 4 for 442A will be delivered in 2029/30

How you'll learn

Learn while you earn, with on-the-job training and education.   

  • To become an apprentice, you must register with Skilled Trades Ontario and work for an employer who accepts full responsibility for your instruction in all aspects of the trade. Your in-class learning is completed at Loyalist.  
  • Once you are employed and signed on as an apprentice, you will be notified when in-school training is available. 
  • Your apprenticeship requirements include completing a skillset book, 8,160 hours of on-the-job training and four levels of in-school training for a total of 1,050 hours. 
  • Level 1: 270 hours (9 weeks)  
  • Level 2: 270 hours (9 weeks)  
  • Level 3: 270 hours (9 weeks)  
  • Level 4: 240 hours (8 weeks) 

NOTE: 309A and 442A take the same Level 1, 2 & 3 but must take a separate Level 4 course that is specific to their trade 

  • You can attend four full-time blocks of training, each nine or eight weeks long (Block Release), or study at Loyalist one day per week to complete your four levels (Day Release). 
  • Learning combines classroom instruction and practical theory labs. Put your knowledge to the test in state-of-the-art labs and shops. 
  • During your apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge from Loyalist to real-world experiences with your employer. In the classroom, you can discuss and clarify any workplace issues.

  • Day release:  September 
  • Block release: January

Level 1 (for both 309A & 442A) 

  • ELTA 1000 – Communication and Documentation (27hrs) 
  • ELTA 1001 – Introduction to the Canadian Electrical Code (36hrs) 
  • ELTA 1002 – Trade Practices (36hrs) 
  • ELTA 1003 – Installation and Maintenance Practices (54hrs) 
  • ELTA 1004 – Electrical Fundamentals (81hrs) 
  • ELTA 1005 – Drawings, Specifications and Standard Fundamentals (36hrs) 

Level 2  

  • Both 309A & 442A – To be released in September 2027

Level 3  

  • Both 309A & 442A – To be released in September 2028

 Level 4  

  • 309A – To be released in September 2029
  • 442A – To be released in September 2029

Admission requirements

This program is only open to registered apprentices. 

Learn how to register as an apprentice and confirm your invitation. 

Please note: 

  • You can complete your studies while you continue to work as an apprentice registered with Skilled Trades Ontario. You and your employer must enter into a contract representing your employer’s willingness to support you through this certificate.   
  • You must be at least 16 years old and have completed Grade 12 or the equivalent (GED or ACE).   
  • Early registration as an apprentice is possible through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program; please contact your local school board for more information.   

Recommended academic preparation 

Math, science and English. High school courses in automotive mechanics would be an asset.   

How much will it cost?

  • Earn while you learn. You will receive a paycheque from your employer/sponsor for your on-the-job training.   
  • The province pays most of the in-class costs of apprenticeship training. Skilled Trades Ontario will forward information about schooling and costs once you are registered. The Ontario Government also has useful information about options for financial help on their website. 
  • If you enrol in the block release in-class program, you may be eligible for employment insurance (EI) to cover your time away from work.   

Further study

  • With your Apprenticeship Completion Certificate from Loyalist and completion of at least 8,160 hours of on-the-job training, you will be eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification to become a licensed Electrician (309A – Electrician Construction & Maintenance or 442A – Industrial Electrician).
  • Several universities and colleges will provide credit recognition for your studies at Loyalist. Explore our available transfer agreements.
