Detailed admission requirements can be found on each program page.

The framework for admission to Loyalist College’s full-time post-secondary program is governed by Policy AOP 226 (Admissions).

Information for…

Mature applicants

Domestic applicants who are 19 years of age on the first day of classes in the year of admission, and who do not have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), are considered as mature applicants.

Mature applicants must complete the required subjects for admission. If any subjects are missing, you might be asked to take a diagnostic test. Mature applicants are treated on an individual basis and should reach out to Enrolment Services at admissions@loyalistcollege.com as early as possible to determine if pre-entry testing and/or college preparatory studies are required.

NOTE: Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or who do not have permanent residence status are not considered under this clause.

Applicants educated outside of Ontario

To be considered for admission to Loyalist, applicants must provide proof of academic standing equivalent to a Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Applicants from outside of Ontario – including international applicants – must submit certified transcripts of their grades.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide documented proficiency in English.

International applicants

An international applicant is a person wishing to study in Canada who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident, as defined by the current Immigration Act. The mature student clause does not apply to international student applicants.

Transfer students from other Ontario colleges and post-secondary institutions

Applicants who have successfully completed a portion of a program at an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology will be accepted into the same or a similar program at Loyalist College with appropriate transfer credits for training and education already completed.

Loyalist is committed to maximizing the accessibility of all our programs to learners with partial or complete credentials from colleges or universities. Applicants with training at other institutions are advised to submit their documentation of such formal education to Loyalist at the time of application.

Applicants with work experience or non-credentialed learning

Applicants with work experience or other types of non-credentialed learning may be eligible for credits at Loyalist through prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR). Graded credits (as opposed to exemptions) are granted.

(i) Challenge processes
Many course and module requirements are eligible for challenge. The challenge process measures demonstrated learning against the knowledge and skills required by course outcomes through a variety of evaluation methods. If successful, credit will be awarded without requiring enrolment in a course or module. Requests for challenges should be made at the time of admission to a program so that the challenge process can be scheduled within a reasonable period of time.
A challenge fee is payable in advance and is not refundable.

(ii) Portfolio-assisted assessment of prior learning
Individuals with substantial non-credentialed learning gained through work or other experiences, or those who wish to begin a career-planning process and prepare for entry into a College program, may enrol in a PLAR portfolio development course. The resulting portfolios can be submitted to program faculty for assessment against the requirements and learning outcomes of required courses or modules. A tuition fee is charged as are assessment fees for each course evaluation.

(iii) Learning contracts
Successful completion of a credit through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition may require further work on the part of a learner. In these cases, a learning contract may be drawn up at the discretion of the relevant faculty member. An additional fee may be charged.

NOTE: Transfer of credit and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition are available to applicants to a maximum of 75 percent of certificate or diploma requirements. Some programs have identified block credit for certain combinations of transfer credits and/or experience.
