During my time at Loyalist College, I enjoyed the hands-on learning opportunities in my program. COMP1022 Business Computer Applications 1

This course develops the skills required for success in the business community. Emphasis is placed on writing for the workplace to facilitate the design, creation and delivery of business communications. You will use email, letter and memorandum writing, formal report writing, and internal and external communications to create focused messages with appropriately sourced facts, for a variety of business audiences.

MATH1033 Business Math

Students practice the foundational skills required to comprehend the essentials of business mathematics. Topics students will engage in include an arithmetic and algebra review, percentages, ratios, commercial mathematics, and simple and compound interest.

COMM1083 Effective Business Communication

Effective Business Communications prepares students for the various types of formats used to professionally communicate in the workplace, including emails, memos, letters, reports and presentations. Students apply critical thinking principles and brainstorm solutions to situations and problems in order to develop creative and innovative solutions. Students learn of effective strategies to professionally communicate ideas to a variety of audiences. Students also learn elements of writing and grammar that will enhance communication skills to succeed both academically and in the workplace.

BUSI1016 Introduction to Business

Students learn the fundamentals of business within a Canadian and global context, exploring how businesses operate and the interconnected nature of key organizational functions and concepts. As a foundational course, students develop business acumen to help them achieve success in future courses and in their career as a business professional.

MRKT1005 Introduction to Marketing

Students dive into the dynamic world of marketing, including consumer behaviour, market segmentation and the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion). Students explore pricing strategies, distribution channels and communication methods used to reach target audiences. Students learn to understand key factors that influence marketing decisions, developing a strategic foundation to navigate and influence the ever-evolving marketing landscape.

BUSI3007 Organizational Behaviour

Students explore the complexities of workplace dynamics, including interactions, job roles, and people management. They analyze how multiple, sometimes conflicting factors shape human behaviour and performance in professional settings. Key topics include emotional intelligence, personality, motivation, team dynamics, leadership, organizational change, and workplace culture.

PROF1020 Professional Development 1

Students learn strategies for ongoing personal and professional growth to enhance their work performance. They identify learning strengths and challenges, recognize procrastination triggers, and develop effective time management and group work strategies. Through activities that promote critical thinking and self-evaluation, students build self-care practices and confidence to manage stress and prevent burnout. Students gain adaptability, resilience, and teamwork skills essential for success in college, the workplace, and future careers.

MEDI1022 Social Media & Emerging Technology

Students adopt a business-oriented lens, moving beyond their personal social media experience to identify the platforms that best serve their business based on demographic studies. Students will look at multiple forms of digital communication for business, including blogging and podcasting. Key subjects include crisis management and customer relationship management, the importance of digital reputation, copyrights and A.I in today's business world.

COMP1021 Business Computer Applications - Excel

Students learn how to use spreadsheets to support organizations of all sizes and industries. Students learn to format cells and worksheets, use formulas and functions, analyze and organize data, and present information visually. By developing advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, they gain the ability to assist with key business functions.

ECON2000 Economics

Students explore the impact of micro-economic and macro-economic factors on business opportunities. Through the analysis of current events, students gain an understanding of supply and demand, fiscal and monetary policies, population dynamics, and emerging markets. Students also learn of the growing influence of developing nations, political and economic instability, inflation, fluctuating currencies, protectionism, outsourcing, and regional trading blocs. By the end of the course, students are equipped with the knowledge to analyze and respond to economic changes in the business environment.

BUSI2001 Human Resources Management

Students learn to manage human resources effectively to support organizational success in competitive industries. They develop skills in recruitment, compensation planning, performance management, workplace health and safety, labour relations, workforce planning, and employee training. Through practical activities, students apply human resource strategies relevant to careers in human resources, management, and other roles requiring effective people management.

ACCT1010 Introduction to Financial Accounting

Students learn the fundamentals of financial accounting using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). They discover how businesses navigate the accounting cycle and prepare financial statements. Additionally, students gain hands-on experience with workplace accounting software, building practical skills for real-world applications.

BUSI2002 Operations Management

Students learn key concepts and functions of operations management. Students explore topics such as quality control, quality assurance, reliability and maintenance principles, forecasting, capacity management, and scheduling. Additionally, students explore benchmarking, documentation, and the design of products and services. Students gain an understanding of how effective operations management contributes to organizational success and efficiency.

PROF1021 Professional Development 2

Students learn to develop professional skills that enhance their personal well-being and workplace success. Through a progressive series of learning experiences, students explore emotional and social intelligence, mindfulness practices, and self-care strategies to maintain balance with their work. They examine the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and learn to identify workplace cultures that align with their values and lifestyle. Students also develop skills in change management, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and understanding the role of mentorship in personal and professional growth.

GNED1100 Becoming a Global Changemaker

This Loyalist College graduate attributes course will help shape your perspectives, broaden your understanding of important issues affecting our societies today, and equip you with invaluable knowledge and skills that will inform your ability to influence your community in a meaningful and impactful way. By exploring topics such as cultural competency, Indigenous education, entrepreneurship, sustainability, health and wellness, and ecological literacy, you'll be equipped with a powerful toolkit that extends far beyond the classroom.

BUSI2009 Accounting for Decision Making

Students learn to translate financial and accounting concepts into practical decision-making tools for everyday business management. They develop the skills to apply accounting fundamentals to improve budget management, maximize profits, pitch new ideas, and evaluate the financial viability of projects.

BUSI2004 Basics of Supply Chain Management

Students explore the critical role of supply chain management in business operations. Key topics include logistics, inventory management, and purchasing. Additionally, students research trade agreements, trade organizations, and the impact of technology on supply chain processes. Through these studies, students gain valuable insights into how effective supply chain management can enhance business efficiency and competitiveness.

MRKT2006 Digital Marketing Strategy

Students learn how to create effective digital marketing strategies by integrating key online channels and techniques. Topics include search engines, social media, paid advertising, websites, email marketing, content creation, SEO, and data analytics. Students explore how to generate online awareness, drive engagement, influence purchasing decisions, and build customer loyalty. Students develop skills and tools needed to design impactful digital marketing plans that deliver measurable results.

SUST1000 Principles of Sustainability & Social Responsibility

Students will learn the importance of integrating sustainability principles into organizations for business success. They will explore the impacts of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), focusing on ethical and social responsibilities to the environment and stakeholders. Students will also examine compliance with company policies and procedures, and the resources available to ensure adherence. Additionally, they will explore how data collection, analysis, and accurate reporting affect business profitability and social license to operate.

PROF2035 Professional Development 3

Students develop career strategies and essential job search skills to successfully transition into the business field. They identify their strengths, assess which careers align with their skillset, and enhance workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Students learn how to conduct informational interviews, build a professional network, and engage with professional business associations to expand career opportunities. They develop and apply SMART goals while using mindset strategies to stay focused and motivated. Additionally, students create effective and targeted résumés and cover letters to showcase their qualifications and enhance job search success.

BUSI3011 Project Management

Students acquire foundational project management knowledge, learning the importance of project objectives, timelines and budgets while explaining the scope, time and costs involved with a project. Students use project management tools producing GANTT charts, PERT and CP reports. Students identify the necessity of teamwork in business through understanding tasks, resources, roles and responsibilities of all participants and stakeholders of a project.

LAWS2018 Business Laws & Ethics

Students learn to address common legal issues in business environments. They explore the Canadian legal and court systems, including dispute resolution, contract law, tort law, business structures, intellectual property, and employment law. Through experiential learning, students apply legal concepts to real-world scenarios, enhancing their ability to make informed business decisions. Students also develop strategies for legal planning, risk management, and resolving business challenges. By analyzing case studies and practical examples, students gain skills to navigate legal issues and minimize risks in professional settings.

BUSI2025 Business Simulation

Using business simulation software, students apply their learning to a simulated business. Students make decisions in strategy and tactics, policy, production, accounting, marketing, finance, quality control, human resources, leadership, and teamwork.

ENTR2009 Entrepreneurship

Through a combination of theoretical exploration and experiential learning, students learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and are encouraged to develop their own entrepreneurial mindset. Students learn to identify opportunities, validate ideas, develop business models, and share their story to obtain support from stakeholders. Students finish the course with the knowledge and skills needed to solve problems, innovate, and create value.

PROF2045 Professional Development 4

Students refine key career development skills, including creating effective résumés, cover letters, and professional portfolios. They develop their professional identity through personal branding, networking, and job search strategies. Students practice interview techniques, craft elevator pitches, and build a strong LinkedIn presence to expand their network. The course covers business etiquette, workplace communication, time management, professional conduct, and salary negotiations. In consultation with their faculty advisor, students will arrange a placement, a Service-Learning opportunity, or a Professional Portfolio to prepare for employment opportunities.

MATH2014 Statistics

Students are introduced to statistics and learn quantitative methods used in data analysis and business decision-making. The course emphasizes the use of contemporary statistical software to analyze data and support informed business decisions.

BUSI2024 Service Learning

Students apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities developed throughout their program of study in one of two streams. In the Entrepreneur Stream, students develop a new business idea that could potentially be launched after graduation. In the Intrapreneur Stream, students develop a growth project for an existing business to help them address a current challenge or capitalize on an emerging opportunity. In each stream, students further develop their entrepreneurial mindset in preparation for a career as a business owner or as a valued employee. Loyalist offers flexible learning 

  • You can start your program in September or January. 
  • Expand your opportunities with a double diploma in another College program in as little as two semesters. 
  • You can transfer to or from the same program at any Ontario college and receive full credit for the courses you have completed. 

Earn a Business degree at Loyalist College 

Why leave the Bay of Quinte region to pursue a Business degree when you don’t have to? 

Begin your journey in Loyalist’s two-year Business diploma program and then transfer into the third year of Seneca’s Honours Bachelor of Commerce – Business Management program.
