O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award.

This year, the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award is presented to Chief Callaghan, a 1984 graduate of the Law and Security Administration program, in recognition of the leadership he has demonstrated throughout his nearly 40-year career.

“Each year during Convocation, Loyalist College is proud to honour an alumnus with the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award,” said Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, President and CEO of Loyalist College. “Chief Callaghan is an exceptional ambassador of Loyalist College core values through his distinguished career in policing and tremendous contributions to our community, most notably with the recent partnership which saw the creation of the Belleville Police Service Indigenous Student Bursary. This partnership is an important step toward increased equity, diversity and inclusivity in our community, and will help to remove barriers to education for Indigenous youth.”

The Hugh P. O’Neil Award recognizes a graduate of Loyalist College who has made an exceptional contribution to his or her community through professional, community leadership, or volunteer service. The award was named after Hugh P. O’Neil in 1998 by the Board of Governors, in honour of his leadership as Chair of the College’s Foundations for the New Millennium Campaign.

“Being recognized with the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award is a tremendous honor,” said Michael Callaghan, Chief of the Belleville Police Service. “The path to success starts with believing in yourself, and I want to thank Loyalist faculty and staff who helped me to believe in myself during my time at the College. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to President Vaughan and the Loyalist Board of Governors for this award.”

This year’s convocation ceremonies will run the entire week, from June 6 – 11. These ceremonies will recognize graduating students from 2022, as well as returning graduates from 2020 and 2021, who will now be able to cross the stage in-person.
