Loyalist College celebrates Campus Pride Week
Belleville, ON, Nov. 14, 2022 – Loyalist College celebrates its vibrant LGBTQ2S+ community this week with Campus Pride Week. Led by Loyalist’s Pride on Campus student club, with support from the Loyalist Student Government, the College will host educational activities and social events leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 to highlight the diverse array of identities and experiences that enrich the Loyalist community and campus life.
“Campus Pride Week is an important opportunity for Loyalist to demonstrate our core values of being a caring and inclusive College,” said Mark Kirkpatrick, Acting President of Loyalist College. “As we approach Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20 and commemorate the countless lives lost to anti-transgender violence, I encourage everyone to reflect on our collective responsibility to maintain a safe, welcoming and equitable learning and working environment for everyone at Loyalist. Thank you to the student leaders in the Pride on Campus club and Student Government for creating the space for our College community to expand our understanding of how to become better allies and recognize our 2SLGBTQIA community.”
Pride Week kicks off today with a Pride flag raising and opening ceremony. On Nov. 16, students will hear from educator and support worker Stacey Love-Jolicoeur, Coordinator for TRANSforum Quinte. TRANSforum Quinte provides free, confidential support to transgender, questioning and gender non-conforming individuals at any age or stage. On Nov. 17, Loyalist College counsellor Cassie Richardson will hold a Positive Space Workshop designed to help participants create an inclusive environment on campus.
College community members can purchase a Loyalist College Pride shirt for $10 at the Pride Booth in the College’s Dining Hall on Nov. 15 and 17, with all proceeds donated to TRANSforum Quinte.
