Your Student Government has made exciting enhancements to the Student Health Plan!

As a full-time domestic or international student at Loyalist, you will receive prescription drug, vision, dental and paramedical services coverage. and travel & accident benefits.

International students also receive 12-month accidental/emergency health coverage while they are in Canada through GuardMe International Insurance.

Summary of plan

Prescription drugs
  • 80 percent to a maximum of $3,000
  • Includes various birth control options and methods.
  • There are some exceptions.
Dental
  • Basic and Preventative: 80%
  • Minor Restorative: 70%
  • Major Restorative: 10%
  • Maximum: $600
Vision
  • 100% coverage for one eye exam and $150 for prescribed glasses, contacts every 24 months
Paramedical Practitioner
  • 80% co-insurance
  • $300 max registered massage therapist (RMT), referral required
  • $300 max physiotherapist, referral required
  • $300 max chiropractor, referral required
  • $500 max MSW, clinical psychologist, referral required
Accident benefits

Coverage for expenses related to an accident such as:

  • Life insurance
  • Medical and dental expenses
  • Emergency taxi
  • Rehabilitation
  • Repatriation
  • Eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Home and vehicle modification

Coverage period for each semester

The coverage period for each semester start is as follows:

  • September Start Students: September 1 – August 31
  • January Start Students: January 1 – August 31
  • May Start Students: May 1 – August 31

Please note: Although coverage begins at the start of the semester, there is a registration period at the beginning of your first semester. During this time, the student health plan contractor is not able to confirm coverage and will not process or reimburse claims. Please note that pharmacies and dental offices cannot accept your Student ID Card for Pay Direct Services during the registrationperiod. Please keep receipts to make a manual claim once the registration period ends.

Eligibility

Full-time students at our Belleville, Bancroft, Port Hope, and Tyendinaga locations, as well as Open Enrolment/Distance students in the ECE and DSW programs are eligible for health plan coverage. To maintain eligibility, students must be enrolled in at least 70 percent of the course hours required for their program each semester. Dropping a course may affect your status as a full-time student, impacting your eligibility for the health plan.

Part-Time Students and Students with documented permanent disabilities

Students registered in a course load below 70% may opt-in to the Student Health Plan during the change of coverage period. Students may self-register through the insurer’s website during the registration period of their first semester.

Student health plan opt-out and opt-in dates

During the dates listed below: You may decline coverage for the Health Plan by completing the online opt-out application should you already have other coverage in place.

Full-time students may add their eligible spouse and/or dependent children to the plan by paying an additional fee.

Please note: Students may only opt out of the semester in which they have started their program.
