At the colleges, strikes are usually peaceful forms of protest. Picket lines may be formed by striking employees and there can be delays while entering campuses.
A strike may take different forms. In general, it is a refusal to work in the normal way that is designed to slow down, disrupt, or stop college operations. A strike is organized by a union as a form of protest typically in an attempt to force the colleges to agree to their demands. There are different forms of strikes: work-to-rule, partial walk-out, rotating strike, and full walk-out strike.
Members of the Full-Time Support Staff union provide a range of services across the college including, but not limited to, admissions and registration, financial aid, student services, academic and learning supports, athletics and recreation, building maintenance, marketing, laboratories, and information technology. This strike does not involve faculty, counsellors, Part-Time Support Staff, and those classified as Administrative employees or management. It also does not include campus security, food services or custodial services.

Not necessarily. The strike does not involve professors or instructors, and most classes are expected to continue as scheduled. However, some classes that rely on support from lab technicians, technologists, or learning facilitators may experience changes or disruptions.
Students will continue to have access to campus and services, and may cross picket lines to attend classes or activities.
Picket lines may be set up at campus roadside entrances, but they are generally peaceful and meant to raise awareness of the strike. Students should plan for possible delays, as picket lines can slow traffic or limit access points.
In the event of a strike, you may encounter picket lines at campus entrances, and delays may occur. The following guidelines are provided to help ensure safety and respect during this time.
- Remain calm and courteous, allowing demonstrators to share their messages or concerns.
- Move through the picket line cautiously to protect everyone’s safety.
- If driving, proceed carefully. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and drivers can be found at fault if a pedestrian is struck.
- Avoid provocation or confrontation with picketers. Try to maintain normal, respectful interactions with those on the line.
- Use your normal route to enter campus, do not attempt to bypass the line.
- Remember that those on the picket line are members of the college community exercising their legal right to strike, communicate information, and use peaceful persuasion.
Plan ahead
- Allow extra time to enter campus, as delays may vary.
- If you take public transportation, note that buses will not cross the picket line and you may need to walk from the road.
- Consider carpooling if possible.
