1. Introduction and Purpose
To provide consistent guidelines and outline responsibilities for short-term disability management and absence reporting at Loyalist College.
2. Application
This policy applies to all employees of the College.
3. Definitions
Disability: a medical impairment/restriction due to a non-occupational illness or injury which prevents the employee from performing the essential duties of his/her own occupation or an available alternative occupation.
Eligible Employees: employees who are entitled to short-term disability benefits in their employment contract and who meet the criteria of the Disability Management Program.
4. Policy Statement
- 4.1 All employees will be treated in a compassionate, timely and confidential manner. Achieving this result requires close co-operation between the employee, manager, the College and/or Service Providers. The College is committed to ensuring that all eligible employees receive appropriate access to absence-related benefit plans.
- 4.2 Employees who are unable to report for work on a regularly scheduled work day due to a non- occupational illness or injury must call or leave a voicemail message for their immediate manager, or designate, prior to the start of the work day.
- 4.3 Employees must contact their manager, or designate, immediately if they experience an occupational illness or injury.
- 4.4 In the case of non-occupational absence in excess of five consecutive working days, the short-term disability plan will cover eligible employees where the impairment is supported by objective medical evidence.
- 4.5 The College reserves the right to seek an independent medical opinion or request medical documentation should circumstances warrant such documentation.
