1. Introduction and Purpose

Loyalist College aims to attract, recruit and select the most qualified individuals to achieve its strategic goals and to uphold its reputation as an employer of choice. This policy outlines the commitment to fair and consistent recruitment and selection practices of all Loyalist College’s potential employees.

2. Application

This policy applies to all staff directly hired by Loyalist College.

3. Policy Statement

Loyalist College seeks to be a leader in equity, diversity, and inclusivity in recruitment. Loyalist College’s goals of an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and high-quality workforce requires the conscious adoption of principles and practices in its recruitment processes, including its processes related to the composition of interview committees. These principles and practices are designed to ensure that access to the College’s employment opportunities is equitable and inclusive by removing employment-related barriers, particularly those based on protected grounds. Interview committees must consider any diversity-related issues that exist with respect to the relevant employee group and must consider what steps it may reasonably take to address those issues

  • To sustain its high-quality workforce, Loyalist College is committed to hiring the best-qualified candidates for its employment opportunities and aspires to achieve an inclusive, caring, creative, engaging, and accountable workforce, consistent with the vision and mission set out in its Strategic Plan.
  • Adherence to equitable, consistent, and transparent recruitment and selection procedures will promote the successful acquisition of qualified talent in a highly competitive environment and develop and enhance the College’s reputation as a learning institution and employer of choice within the local and wider communities it serves. The recruitment and selection policy at Loyalist College will:
    • Ensure that the best-qualified applicants are hired.
    • Ensure the implementation of a fair, open, and efficient procedure for recruiting and selecting staff who possess the required competencies to meet the College’s needs.
    • Promote a workforce that is representative of the College’s diverse community by ensuring access to employment and career development at Loyalist College.
    • Ensure that the people hired have the appropriate qualifications.
    • Ensure that the recruitment and selection of qualified applicants is in accordance with the College’s Strategic Plan, legislative requirements and other applicable policies and procedures.
    • Ensure that Loyalist follows the principles of the Ontario Human Rights Code to provide equal opportunities in employment practices.
    • Ensure that Loyalist offers a best-in-class candidate experience during the recruitment process.
    • Embrace the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act in all recruitment activities.
    • Ensure no nepotism or favouritism in hiring, while providing fair opportunity for all individuals to be considered for employment.
