You can save time and effort by getting credit toward your Loyalist College program for similar courses that you’ve completed at the college or at other public post-secondary institutions.

Credit transfer and exemptions 

Transfer credit is awarded based on credits earned from an external post-secondary institution. A course or combination of courses can be used to match at least 80 percent of the learning outcomes of the course for which you are seeking credit. You must submit all the required information, including a detailed course outline or syllabus for the course you completed. There is a non-refundable $25 fee per external transfer, up to a maximum of $125 per semester. 

An exemption is awarded based on previous credits earned at Loyalist College. There is no fee for exemption applications.  

Generally, transfer credits are only granted for credits obtained within the past seven years.  

Please note that dropping courses through transfer credits or exemptions may affect your full-time status and funding. 

How it works
  • You must apply for transfer credits before the semester starts and up to the first 10 school days of the academic semester.  
  • You will need to provide all supporting documents, including official transcripts, course outlines, and international credential evaluation (WES or ICAS) for courses from non-Canadian institutions.  
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications may not be processed.  
  • The program coordinator or faculty will assess the transfer credit application. The school dean or a designate will make the final decision based on the documentation provided and specific program requirements.  
  • Courses approved for transfer credit are listed on your academic transcripts but are not calculated in your program weighted average. Transfer credits will not be added to your academic record until after your registration has been completed.  
  • Transfer credit can only be granted for up to 75 percent of a program’s requirements, or up to 50 percent for a degree program.

Advanced standing

With university or college credits, you may be eligible for advanced standing in one of our post-secondary programs. You could earn a diploma in as little as one year! Please contact the program coordinator in your program of interest for details. 

We also offer formal accelerated and fast-track programs. With a degree or diploma in a related field, you may be eligible to complete a diploma at Loyalist College in 16 months or less in the following programs: 

  • Business Sales and Marketing – SALF 
  • Child and Youth Care – CYAS 
  • Social Service Worker – SSWA
